Culturally and historically rich, this gargantuan country is home to a venerable culture and some of the world's most iconic sights and art treasures, despite being despotically ruled (as it has for nearly all its history).

However, for the time being we do not recommend travel to Russia - particularly by citizens of Western countries - due to its status in the past several years as a dangerous rogue state and particularly its unprovoked February 2022 invasion of Ukraine, the worst threat to European security since World War II.

Russia rated - surprise! - worst country in Europe for gays/lesbians

The Church of the Savior on the Spilled Blood in St. Petersburg

Part of the problem is that Russia doesn't have active tourist boards abroad. Nor do their airlines do much advertising.

Why is Russian tourism in such a funk? "Russia may rank among the top 15 countries by the number of World Heritage natural and cultural sites but tourism accounts for just three percent of the gross domestic product.

"The number of tourists coming to Russia fell last year by 7% to 2.1 million, while the number of Russians visiting foreign countries jumped by 32% to 12.6 million." -MSN.com

The people at Corinthia Hotels will be in a good mood today: The Corinthia Palace Hotel & Spa in Malta and the Corinthia Hotel St. Petersburg in Russia, have been named "Malta’s Leading Hotel" and "Europe’s Leading Meetings and Conference Hotel," respectively, at the World Travel Awards (WTA) European regional ceremony held in Antalya, Turkey.
