Staying at a "snow hotel" above Norway´s Arctic Circle

The Snowhotel Kirekenes, one of just a handful in the world (most of them, of course, in northern Europe, especially Scandinavia). The property´s centerpiece is a former barn turned complex, whose hallway is lined with an “ice bar” (above) and about a dozen rooms featuring snow sculptures depicting a range of images, from Vikings (like we had) to Arctic fauna to characters from Disney´s Frozen. That´s supplemented by the modern reception building (with some appealing Arctic art); 21 more…

A Margaritaville state of mind in the Dominican Republic

Set along a stretch of pure white-sand beach in Cap Cana, an exclusive enclave of the DR´s most popular resort area Punta Cana - and just 15 minutes from the Punta Cana International Airport -  five-star all-inclusive property Margaritaville Island Reserve Cap Cana., which opened a little over three years ago is one of just eight Cap Cana resorts. I visited not long after it opened, and found its “no worries,” tropical vibe spoke to me the moment we pulled up to the hotel entrance adorned…

  • Searching for a hotel on the mountains? Try www.albergoalpenrose.it!
Albergo Alpenrose** is in Gressoney Saint Jean and 'is characterised by a cosy atmosphere and a typical alpine style. It's the ideal point in order to explore the magnificent mountain tops of the Monte Rosa massif both on foot and on skis.
Our hotel in fact is in a strategic position. It’s actually situated 50 m from the Weissmatten slopes (where the Women's European Ski Cup takes place in December) and its snowpark and skischool, from the cross-country trail and 10 minutes far from the rest of the Monterosa ski domain
  • Now in the Tripatini blog: really helpful tips on avoiding bringing home bedbugs from your hotel.
  • Talk about cranky guests, Ed, the New York Times reports that a reputation management company may sue TripAdvisor on behalf of several dozen clients. Reviews that accuse hotel staff of theft, assault or discrimination, the company says, don't belong on the site because they are "allegations of criminality.”

"Some hoteliers believe that TripAdvisor has gone beyond the neutral role of host through actions like sending e-mails highlighting “hotel horror stories” — in effect, endorsing those opinions.

"Other complaints are that TripAdvisor is unwilling to remove questionable reviews from the site, declines to retire older reviews (even when a property is under new management) and screens owners’ responses more vigorously than members’ comments."

Reputation management is what I used to do for a living, so I'd like to know: What do you think of all this?
  • Are people just getting crankier, or is there a real problem here? ETN reports "While overall satisfaction among European hotel guests appears to have remained stable after achieving a five-year high in 2009, when the benefit of lower guest room rates is removed, satisfaction with the rest of the guest experience has declined notably, according to the J.D. Power and Associates."
  • A crisis: The Chelsea Hotel, where every painter and poet and rock star you can think of has stayed and, y'know, played. But now it's up for sale. Please don't change it: http://www.tripatini.com/profiles/blogs/chelsea-hotel-new-yorks?xg_...
  • Hotel Mocking Bird Hill has an on site art gallery featuring work by co-owner Barbara Walker as well as local artists. The hotel itself is almost a gallery with original works by Walker in all the rooms and public areas. http://bit.ly/aJVhY9
  • How about a hotel that doubles as an art museum? They've done it in Japan -- read about it on the Tripatini blog.
  • Hi Andrea, The Burnt Out Lodge in Montana is a really a place to get away off the beaten track. Seven miles from the nearest paved road, which is another seven miles from the nearest town. Check out this article: http://tinyurl.com/ydnwud2
