Staying at a "snow hotel" above Norway´s Arctic Circle

The Snowhotel Kirekenes, one of just a handful in the world (most of them, of course, in northern Europe, especially Scandinavia). The property´s centerpiece is a former barn turned complex, whose hallway is lined with an “ice bar” (above) and about a dozen rooms featuring snow sculptures depicting a range of images, from Vikings (like we had) to Arctic fauna to characters from Disney´s Frozen. That´s supplemented by the modern reception building (with some appealing Arctic art); 21 more…

A Margaritaville state of mind in the Dominican Republic

Set along a stretch of pure white-sand beach in Cap Cana, an exclusive enclave of the DR´s most popular resort area Punta Cana - and just 15 minutes from the Punta Cana International Airport -  five-star all-inclusive property Margaritaville Island Reserve Cap Cana., which opened a little over three years ago is one of just eight Cap Cana resorts. I visited not long after it opened, and found its “no worries,” tropical vibe spoke to me the moment we pulled up to the hotel entrance adorned…

  • Max,
I have to agree with you about the water. I'm currently hovering in Phuket, Thailand and although everyone has bottled water etc, the mini-bar still charges. However, I can't really grumble because the place I'm staying is fantastic. £20 a night, huge ensuite room, free beach towel, 100m from the beach and they offer reams of information and advice if you ask! Definitely found myself a bargain!
  • I do not like the daily resort fees. They really add a lot of $$ to the bill and for many items that I do not use. And I really do not like the room service delivery charge added on top of the room service fee, both of which need to be supplemented with a tip to the delivery person. Instead, I'll have the hotel restaurant call me when my food is ready and I'll go pick it up. Saves lots of $ and I get the food sooner.
  • Resort fees, fees for local calls, energy fees. Not a fee, per se, but non-refundable, non-cancellable prepaid reservations.
  • Max, definitely an interesting article. I agree about the water. For me, I think the charging for wi-fi or Internet in general is a big offender.
  • Interesting story on outrageous hotel surcharges today. What do YOU think are the worst offenders in the hotel pile-on charge category?

Mine: charging for bottled water in places where the tap water is not potable.
