Berlin is one of Europe´s most welcoming LGBTQ cities

AndreyPopov   In the 1920s and 30s, Germany´s capital was a major destination for homo-inclined visitors, as one of the world's first cities to become socially accepting of gays and lesbians. Several LGBTQ social movements and institutions were founded here, including the Institute Of Sexology and the Scientific-Humanitarian Committee, which campaigned for the equal rights of gay people in Germany in the early 20th century. Tragically, of course, all that came to an end with.the rise of the…

Germany´s Revolutionary Bauhaus Movement of Architecture/Design

Maria Victoria Lopez, sjo In 1919, in the immediate wake of the devastation wrought by World War I, an architect named Walter Gropius, one of the pioneering maestros of modern architecture, founded an art school that combined fine arts with crafts and eventually architecture, with a minimalist approach to design that combined all of it with contemporary technology under the maxim "form follows function". Starting in eastern Germany - first in Dessau, then in Weimar, and finally a third…

Prost! Munich's Oktoberfest Is Back!

Holzijue/Pixabay From September 17 to October 3, the legendary celebration of German beer, cuisine, and culture in Bavaria's capital is returning after a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Unsprprisingly, it's necessary to make your arrangements months in advance, so if you've always wanted to experience Wies'n (as it's known in Bavarian), take note here for 2023! read post

Tooling Around Berlin in an Umbrella with Wheels?

Grego Germany’s capital is already a super-fun place to visit. And you can make it extra fun by tooling around the city in a very special kind of car. An East German company produced more than three million Trabants - cheap, ubiquitous little two-stroke-engine jalopies made out of plastic – from 1957 until 1991. And Trabis were given quite a few fond (and not so fond) nicknames, including “Racing Cardboard,” “Escape Suitcase,” “Roofed Sparkplug,” “Two-Stroke Dwarf,” and “Umbrella with…

  • Danke, Sigi and Evelyn. It's such a pleasure -- especially in this era of Tripadvisor -- to get information from people who really know what they're talking about.
  • There's enough to see in and around Berlin or Frankfurt to stay in either city. My favorite part of Berlin is around Potsdamer Platz -- like Times Square with lots of nightlife, shopping and enegry. In Frankfurt, walking through the old town, with its medieval buildings, and along the riverfront, is always interesting. Take a foodie break on Fressgasse (eating street), a pedestrian passage lined with the best of the wursts. Both cities have fabulous museums, and in Berlin you can take a guided tour in a Trabi, the often-maligned car produced in the former East Germany that now is a fashionable vintage model. Get a Eurail pass before leaving North America, and go anywhere.
  • I just found out about this deal of up to 50% off from Air Berlin: "For three days only, starting October 25 at 6pm (EST) and ending October 28 at 6pm (EST) airberlin is offering up to 50% off its already low fares from Florida to Europe. In addition, passengers can take advantage of additional discounts on airberlin’s extensive European network. Destinations include London, Helsinki, Palma de Mallorca from its Dusseldorf hub and via airberlin’s hub in Berlin passengers can easily connect to Frankfurt/Main, Moscow, Oslo, Stockholm and Gothenberg."

  • Guten Tag All, Michael here, a new member in Tripatini. I'm a journalist/author/blogger who currently live in Paris. I am the author of the guide book Paris Movie Walks-10 Guided Walking Tours in the City of Lights and am now blogging about easy hiking (as an activity you and the entire family can undertake on your next vacation, perhaps). As a native German, I can answer a question or two you may have about Germany and as a long time resident of Paris, I can also claim to be of good help for tips, etc. Please do check out my blog: http://easy-hiker.eu/2010/07/12/why-germany-six-reasons/ and see what my book is all about
