Airline pilots and their extremely rigorous training

Rathke A few of you may have had the privilege of visiting the flight deck of a commercial airliner, and found yourself fascinated by the myriad levers, buttons, and other mechanisms surrounding the captain and co-pilot. Are there other requirements along with flight training itself? Here's a quick…

  • I'm flying international late this afternoon. What with Friday's terrorist bust, I wonder if the security lines will be God-awful or merely awful.
  • Charles, I just tried the PC-version of the app you recommended. It works. Thank you and I'll email her.
  • I haven't used it yet, but TSA has an app that according to them tells you wait times at airports. http://apps.usa.gov/tsa-app/
  • My niece is flying from JFK to the UK on Monday. Does anyone have any idea how backed up the security gate will be?
  • A story with a happy ending -- really. I posted a rave of the movie Cairo Time, which stars two humans and the city of Cairo, on another Tripatini group. A Tripatini member then said that she'd paid to see the movie on a Delta flight to Las Vegas, but the movie went on the fritz, so she never got to see the movie and she was out the money she'd spent to see it. Here's the happy postscript: "Hi Ed... I got an email from Delta. They're emailing me a $12 refund check and have credited my account with 3500 miles for the inconvenience."
  • Biofuels: Are you sure this is a great idea? Boeing moved its head office from Seattle to Chicago four or five years ago, but here on the West Coast we're still peppered with news about Big Bo. This morning Boeing is applauding a government initiative on biofuels, saying they're all for it. But should we be all for it?
  • I just found out about this deal of up to 50% off from Air Berlin: "For three days only, starting October 25 at 6pm (EST) and ending October 28 at 6pm (EST) airberlin is offering up to 50% off its already low fares from Florida to Europe. In addition, passengers can take advantage of additional discounts on airberlin’s extensive European network. Destinations include London, Helsinki, Palma de Mallorca from its Dusseldorf hub and via airberlin’s hub in Berlin passengers can easily connect to Frankfurt/Main, Moscow, Oslo, Stockholm and Gothenberg."
  • Sam, I'll confess to feeling less warm & fuzzy about Slater than I did at the time. On another subject, says here that Air France will resume flights to Phnom Penh for the first time since c.1970.
  • I saw this, too. Everyone, including me, lionized Slater for his mad-as-hell-and-I'm-not-going-to-take-it-anymore attitude at the time, but I've since reconsidered my reaction. How do other people feel about him now?
  • AP news item that caught my eye this morning:

JetBlue Attendant Pleads Guilty, Gets No Jail Time

"The former flight attendant whose meltdown landed him in court in New York City has pleaded guilty to attempted criminal mischief and will undergo counseling.

Steven Slater appeared in court Tuesday. He will undergo at least a year of counseling and substance-abuse treatment.

He will get no jail time and a year of probation if he completes the program to the judge's satisfaction. If he does not, he will get one to three years in jail."

    Substance abuse, eh?
