Prepping for an Africa safari

Some getaways you can make without much fuss - on the spur of the moment, even. Rhino Conservation course in Kruger National Park

The aim of the course is twofold. First, to provide an in-depth education suitable for guides, rangers, tourists, and academics on the two African rhinos and the conservation thereof. Second, to establish and teach non-invasive methods for monitoring rhino populations.

The main method of instruction would be hands on participation in a rhino monitoring project. This would be supplemented by lectures. The goal of the monitoring project would be to establish identikits for all rhinos within a given research area. This would be accomplished by a variety of methods depending on the area, including:

    • camera traps, tracking/trailing, and plaster casts of tracks would be used to identify individual rhinos by their tracks.
    • Trailing on foot or by vehicle when possible to get photos of rhinos for identification purposes.
    • Trailing on foot to establish rhino movement patterns, habitat selection, water sources, and territories.
    • Observing on foot or by vehicle to study behaviour and habitat/food selection.
    • Dung analysis to study food selection.

Topics to be covered during the course would include:

    1. rhinos of the world
    2. rhino biology
    3. evolution of Rhinocerotidae and subtaxa
    4. rhino behaviour (black and white rhinos)
    5. poaching and anti-poaching
    6. conservation issues
    7. conservation research and research methods
    8. tracking and trailing
    9. rhino habitats & ecosystems

Not only will your 28 days be filled with exciting experiences while gaining valuable knowledge and insight into the natural world. You will also become one of nature’s responsible custodians for it has never been more important than now. The natural world is under threat with animal numbers plummeting, species becoming extinct and vast acres of land being gobbled up with human encroachment stretching its greedy fingers all over the globe.

And this is exactly the aim of the LWC and EcoTraining. For we adhere to the notion that there is no conservation without education. And with this at the core, we want to become “the model of excellence for guide training in Kenya”.

“We believe that there is a real need to supply quality training to potential guides in order to improve their guiding abilities, to make them more responsible and to give them a sense of pride in what they do. For many of these guides, the tourism industry is the only career option available.”

2012 will see Eco Training return to the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy (LWC) in Kenya for two more 28 day field guide courses – 10 February-8 March and 3-30 August. There are still places available, so book now and explore the plains on the lower slopes of Mount Kenya teaming with a great variety of wildlife.
