Safari adventures in Botswana

Diego Delso Around the size of France and with a population of just under 2½ million, the largely flat-savannah Land of the Tswana is one of Africa’s premier wildlife destinations (and parenthetically, diamond producers): big game and only lightly touristed, with a “fewer people, more animals” tourism philosophy. I have fond memories of visiting its reknowned Okavango Delta on safari many years ago, but there are other aspects to the country very much noting as well: read post

Kariega Game Reserve: a South African recovery story

It took us three days to drive from Cape Town along South Africa’s "Garden Route" to Kariega Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape, but it was well worth the drive. Once it was 27 farms, which have all been returned to the wild, and the reserve now covers 115 square kilometers (44½ sq. miles), owned and operated by two of those original farming families. A fictional British TV series, Wild at Heart, which ran from 2006 to 2012, told about much the same thing. The animals at Kariega were…

  • @ Maureen Blevins. Good to hear it! A good guide can make the whole trip magical!
  • I certainly can't let your guide best my guide.  My stay at Ngare Serian last August was absolutely awesome!! Due for the most part to our guides, James and Jonathon.  They found us everything we asked for and then some.  They certainly enjoyed what they were doing, spoke excellent English, and truly made us feel welcome in their country.  I will never forget them!
  • I've found too many guides who would rather be someplace (any place) else and have little genuine interest in the plants and animals these oddball tourists like. Your report on Gideon, i HTT 's guide, is refreshing.
  • I want to update the information I gave about my safari guide in Kenya. His name is Gideon. He could not be better. His is Masia and attended university to first improve his English which is sterling, and to learn the thechnicalities of the flora and fauna you see on safari. I could not stump him with a question, and I tend to ask some pretty arcane questions. The company names i HTT Holidays and Incentives, website www.travelhtt.com
