Not well known outside South America, this city of 40,000 is located down south in the mountains of Rio Grande do Sul, and when I visited back in November 2016 I was charmed by its Alpine vibe, thanks to its large contingent of Germans immigrants after its founding in 1875. Thanks to its cool climate, Gramado became a popular resort destination, and but it didn´t become inextricably intertwined with Christmas until 1986, when the annual festival Natal Luz was founded. I found a video showing what the festival is like today and clearly it´s only become more extravagant in the nine years since!
