The company’s Borneo Adventure package takes travelers on a journey through Borneo’s breath-taking rain forests and culturally dynamic cities and villages. Take a guided canopy walk hundred

Trippin' in Thailand

Bangkok's chaos was nearly unequaled. It's rainy season now and the simple act of breathing is like trying to pull air through a wet wool blanket. But as I've made my way north, the climate has changed as well as the cultural temperment. In Pang Soong, I found a spiritually centered mountain village buried in the jungle at 4,000 feet. Cooler, calmer. We did the obligatory zip line here, Flight of the Gibbon. It funnels bhat into the local economy...a better proposition than opium, bush meat and,

It’s not often that a once-in-a-lifetime deal comes around twice-in-a-lifetime. Train, Boat, Five Days in Cabo (not) Day 3

Another day at sea, and we are slowly making our way towards Catalina. Although I am sad we are missing Cabo San Lucas, now that the satellite photos are posted, most understand that Cabo would not have been much fun.DSC02144Some years ago I flew my Cessna 172 to Catalina’s awkward airstrip just to eat the great buffalo burgers at the airport café. They were as juicy and flavorful as any burger I had ever tasted; worth the trip for sure.As far as the “awkward” airport, the approach was towards a cliff f

Train, Boat, Five Days in Cabo (not) 2

This morning I called my wife, Michael, to ask about the fires raging and approaching our area. At the moment, all is cool, well, at 100 degrees perhaps the word should be normal. I let her know I was excited abut the possibility of some high waves in the Cabo San Lucas area because of hurricane Jimena. I’ve got this weird thing about big ships and no motion. I want to feel like I’m at sea, not at home.Elation is a big ship, almost three football fields long with a normal capacity of 2,052 passe

Train, Boat, Five Days in Cabo (not)

I’ve been wanting to try one of Carnival’s short cruises to the Mexican Riviera, and so jumped at the chance to do the Elation from San Diego. It’s a five day cruise, and since my last cruise to Mexico had all the ports canceled because of the flu, two days in Cabo San Lucas would be the karma I deserve.Good news, the MetroLink stops about 5 miles from my house. From there to Union Station in Los Angeles, then Amtrak to about 50 yards from Elation in San Diego.DSC02080The bag was a slight problem. Not o

Now, I truly do love good hotels. I love beautiful bed-and-breakfasts, intimate inns, ravishing resorts, and hip hostels. I love having a range of services (including housekeeping to clean up after me, God bless ‘em), stylish décor, and amenities like really cool bars to hang out in.

But let’s face it: it’s not like there aren’t drawbacks. There’s usually not enough storage space (and when was the last time you saw an actual closeable drawer or cabinet in a hotel bathroom?). On th
