Osaka is Best Known for its Ubiquitous Cuisine and Energetic Locals.
Osaka is located roughly in the center of Japan's main island of Honshu. It is about 500 kilometers from Tokyo but can be reached in two and a half hours via Shinkansen bullet train. Osaka is often referred to among Japanese as a rival city to Tokyo, but Osaka has a longer history as a metropolis. Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who united Japan for the first time, built Osaka Castle in the center of the city, and although rebuilt after World War II, its majestic appearance still shines brilliantly today. In 1603, when the political center of Japan shifted to Edo (Tokyo), Osaka reached its peak as a city of merchants. Even today, numerous large corporations are headquartered in Osaka. Additionally, Osaka is known as a “kuidaore,” or “gourmand’s town,” where eating is “the thing!” Wealthy merchants often held their luncheon or dinner business meetings here, and thus, chef skills were honed. With the Osaka Expo scheduled to be held in 2025, Osaka is attracting a great deal of attention.
