What Makes a Place Gay-Friendly?

Now that the travel industry is targeting the guy community, I ask myself what makes a place 'gay friendly'? Looking around, I found some statements that make a place gay friendly, of course from the eye of the beholder.

For instance, Netherlands is usually mentioned as the top of gay friendly places thanks to its federal inclusive policies when in April 2011 granted full marriage and registered partnership rights for same-sex couples, becoming the first country in the world to do this.

Others consider a place gay friendly according to what can offer in terms of night life, clubs, pubs, etc. For example, an article makes this description, 'Buenos Aires is one of the most gay-friendly cities in South America, with a tolerant attitude and thriving nightlife scene', but it does not describe the meaning of "...with a toleran attitude" more than just describing night life. Is this enough?

Trip and Travel Blog has come up with a list of The Most Gay-Friendly Places in Europe, describing places, activities and parades that focused on gay pride in countries like Germany, Spain, France, the UK, Sweden, Switzerland and Greece. This is more like it, if you ask me.

The center of the capital of Germany is home to many monuments, a bustling commercial center, cultural area and one of the key points regarding the gay-friendly life. In fact, the terrace of one of the skyscrapers of Alexanderplatz hosts a gay Sunday session with impressive views over the town.

In today's modern life, we just expect to offer everyone a safe and friendly environment. Don't you think so?

  • A little vague, but well-meaning. Thanks for addressing the issue, anyway.
