I stayed at the Best Western Robert Treat hotel and did the commute by Path to WTC and also New Jersey Transit train Penn to Penn station. The Path trains run all night and the New Jersey transit trains stop at 1am.I was really amazed how fast and cheap those connections are.

What I noticed is the hotel was full of European budget travelers doing the same exact thing. The hotels offer free shuttle service from EWR and to Penn Station, Newark around the clock,so people don't need to worry about walking through the wrong Newark neighborhood. Also having the option to eat on Ferry street in Newark is a huge plus and it seems safe even at night

I didn't know that 4 US presidents have stayed at the Robert Treat and so did Albert Einstein. The rooms seem to go from $72 a night to $120.00 a night depending on which booking site one uses and what time of year it is.The rooms are renovated and very nice and the breakfast is free too.

I was amazed that is was mainly Europeans taking advantage of this budget option ,although I did run into an Australian as well.

The ease of getting to and from the airport to the hotel for free alone is worth it.

Don't know if this trend is on the increase, but compared to last year when I stayed in Newark,it really seems to be.

  • thanks...terrific resource to know about!

  • Boy, is this useful information, even for someone who has an apartment in the city, because who has room for houseguests in a six-tatami apartment?
  • It didn't print out right but one can go to the path website to see the schedules both ways.Note the weekend schedules vary.Still a lot of connections.

  • Betty Austin-Ware- Good,I'm glad that I didn't list something wrong I really do enjoy staying in Newark especially when combining trips.Everbody else at the hotel seemed pleased as well with their selection.

  • No, you weren't.  I haven't completed my ticket reservations yet so searching both.
  • I should of said free Airport shuttles to EWR in Newark in my last comment.Sorry if that was incomplete.info

  • Really welcome information just as I was going to search for a hotel near an early flight out of LaGuardia.

I love booking through Priceline but a bit wary of being able to get one of those two.

  • I also forgot to post about the Priceline name your own price option.($60-$90 a night ,I'm guessing)I've heard if you pick the three star hotel option in Newark, you will get either the Hilton or the Robert Treat. Both good hotels. The Hilton is attached to Penn station ,Newark- so it even makes it more convenient. Both have free Airport shuttles.
  • Hi Ed,

I stayed Saturday through Wednesday.I mainly took the Path from WTC, but I did take the NJ transit train back twice. One time the Train was already there and the other time I had to wait ten minutes. The actual train ride is like 10 minutes.

Now I believe the Path trains take 24 minutes but they were there every time I walked up to the platform.I did see some schedules online.I'll try to post that in case other people do this.I notice the Robert Treat is sold out for several dates on the booking sites, so it's got to be a trend thats increasing

I also should post about the restaurants on Ferry St.Perhaps some locals can do that too.I'd love to try more restaurants in Newark.
