Bangkok is known as the city that never sleeps and is one of the most popular cities in Southeast Asia, especially among digital nomads, who have the luxury of being able to work and travel. Most foreign tourists spend at least a week in this city before heading to a beach resort such as Pattaya, Phuket or Samui Island, and with that in mind, here are a few top tips for staying in Bangkok.
- Sourcing a good hotel – Some people think a walk-in is the best deal, yet we discovered that booking online offers the lowest rates; search online for ‘Bangkok hotels with swimming pool’ and that brings up a list of websites, and you can choose the hotel that best meets your needs. We recommend staying in a central area that makes it easy to travel to any of the many Bangkok attractions, and there are some amazing deals to be had in the low season.
- Getting around – There are a number of ways that you can move around this sprawling metropolis; you can use the BTS mass transportation system, or take taxis everywhere, or you could explore the canal networks. We definitely recommend the latter, which gives you a unique viewpoint of how the Thai people live along the banks of the canals. The other method of getting from A to B is the motorcycle taxis, which is not for the faint of heart, and is obviously the fastest way to move around the city.
- Crossing the street – This can be extremely hazardous; always look both ways, even on a one-way street, as motorcyclists go the wrong way down a one-way street. If you come from a country where they drive on the other side, you automatically look the wrong way when crossing the street, and that could be a fatal mistake. Also, do not cross anywhere except on a pedestrian crossing and even then, never expect that the traffic will stop for you, as they often do not. Here are a few travel tips to save you money.
- Always carry drinking water – Thailand is extremely humid, and it is oh so easy to become dehydrated; we recommend investing in a stainless-steel water bottle and keeping it topped up at all times. Always wear a cap when out in strong sunlight, as the sun is very strong and it is easy to underestimate the strength of the sun. We should drink 8 glasses of water per day if we are in a tropical climate.
