Built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal, the Taj Mahal stands proudly on the banks of the river Yamuna, attracting millions of tourists every single year.

  • Taj Mahal India
  • History Of the Taj Mahal

  • Getting to the Taj Mahal

Visitors to The Mausoleum must climb a red sandstone platform and wear cloth overshoes to honor the custom of not wearing shoes in a mosque and to protect the marble floor. The raised platform has a black-and-white chessboard design and four minarets crowned with an umbrella dome. The entrance is through a 28-meter archway inscribed with verses from the Koran. The Taj features three types of marble work: filigree, relief, and inlay. The dome has a brass pinnacle, and the enclosure beneath it has an exquisite white marble screen. The replica of Queen Mumtaz Mahal's tomb is here, and the actual grave is in the basement. The tombstones of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal are on separate raised platforms decorated with floral inlay designs.

The Taj is best viewed by moonlight, especially on a full moon night, when the gates are open until midnight.

Spend some time at this place appreciating the beauty of the monument and the love of the emperor before heading towards the next destination, the Agra Fort.

After Ibrahim Lodi's death at Panipat in 1526, the construction of Fort Agra began in 1565. This massive red sandstone fort was completed in around eight years at the cost of thirty-five lakh rupees. Qasim Khan Mir Barr-u-Bahr oversaw its construction.

Initially, the fort was a military structure under Akbar's rule. However, during Shah Jahan's reign, it became partly a palace. The fort is an imposing structure with walls of red sandstone stretching three kilometers long. To enter, one must pass through the Amar Singh Gate. The eastern part of the fort houses palaces, mosques, and an audience hall built by three emperors, each showcasing their favored architectural styles. Akbar drew inspiration from both Islamic and Hindu traditions, leading to an eclectic mix of styles. By Shah Jahan's time, the style had become homogenized, making it difficult to distinguish between Hindu and Muslim strands. Shah Jahan added the Diwan-i-Am (public audience hall), the beautiful Diwan-i-Khas (private audience hall), and the magnificent Moti Masjid (Pearl Mosque) to the fort.

🕓 04:00 P.M– Mehtab Bagh (optional)

The Mehtab Bagh garden was the last of eleven Mughal-built gardens along the Yamuna opposite the Taj Mahal and the Agra Fort. Emperor Babur built the garden. It is also noted that Emperor Shah Jahan had identified a site from the crescent-shaped, grass-covered floodplain across the Yamuna River as an ideal location for viewing the Taj Mahal.

Legends attributed to the travelog of the 17th-century French traveler Jean Baptiste Tavernier mention Shah Jahan's wish to build a Black Taj Mahal for himself, as a twin to the Taj Mahal; however, this could not be achieved as he was imprisoned by his son Aurangzeb.
