The historic, atmospheric city of Essaouira, on Morocco's Atlantic coast west of Marrakesh, is fronted by 10 kilometres of white sand swept by the trade winds that are so coveted by kite surfers and windsurfers. These winds, known locally as Chergui, are ideal for surfers, reaching a speed of 30 knots in summer. The part of the beach that is closest to the town has calmer waters, whereas the leeward zone features bigger waves.
Essaouira beach is perfect for any level of expertise. The bay is quite closed and the wind blows towards the shore, where the absence of rocks makes it quite safe. The gusty winds are milder in the morning and stronger in the afternoon. The waves are not too big, perfect for jumping (kitesurf) or to learn how to surf.
When there are no waves is the ideal time for beginners and also to go sailing from the beach to the island of Mogador.
South of the city is Sidi Kaouki, with steady winds and a virgin beach. It is not fit for beginners, because the seabed combines rocks and sand. Your neoprene suit will come in handy because these waters are quite cold!!
You can travel to Essaouira in any season of the year. It is hot in summer, nothing you can’t withstand, and on the seaside the heat is quite pleasant. The average temperature in January is 16.4º C (61.5º F) and in August it’s 22.5º C (72.5º F).
Besides practicing watersports, in the beautiful city of Essaouira you can walk through the streets and alleyways, go horseback riding or camel riding along the beach, visit the medina (open air market) and the harbor … Artists, musicians, artisans and filmmakers have been wooed by its many charms. The walls, turrets and columns conceal a labyrinth of narrow alleys filled with whitewashed houses, ateliers and art galleries that will surely win you over.
Essaouira has three important festivals that are worth noting: Printemps Musical des Alizés in May, a small festival of classical music and opera; the third weekend in June is when the Gnaoua and World Music Festival is held, running for four days and featuring international, national and local performers, as well as art exhibitions; last of all, in late September they celebrate the Festival des Atlantiques Andalouses, an eclectic combination of Andalusian music, art and dance with local and international performers.
