A Sushi Class in Upstate New York

The “How to Make Sushi Class” at the Mohegan Manor in Baldwinsville, New York is the perfect gift for the hard-to-get-for person. Mohegan Manor is located in a historic building built in 1911 as the Oddfellows Mohegan Lodge. The lounge was the original post office for Baldwinsville. It was beautifully restored by Dennis Sick and has been the home of Mohegan Manor since 1989. Mohegan Manor has a restaurant, bar, and event facilities plus a Sushi Club with a dedicated sushi chef.  The club is located downstairs in a large, attractively decorated room with a bar.

The sushi-making class starts with a get-acquainted glass of wine and a wonderful salad with tempura calamari topped with slivers of mango salad. “Can’t feed you on an empty stomach,” quips Peter the sushi chef as the salad is served and continues the sprightly banter throughout the class. The plated sushi included crispy tuna, shrimp and mahi rolls served with wasabi and pickled ginger.

Then guests prepare their own sushi following Peter’s instructions. After layering the rice, fish and vegetables on the nori, it is rolled on a sushi mat and cut into eight pieces. No matter how unprofessional the guest’s attempt may look it will still be tasty. The meal ends with something more traditional, possibly a decadent chocolate brownie with ice cream.

Mohegan Manor has other gift cards and a variety of activities including "Let's Get Sauced," a cooking class with chef Tim Brown that includes a five-course dinner with wine pairing. For more information, go to moheganmanor.com.
