Surely this is paradise, listening to a cool band while the sun sets over the pristine Carlsbad beach with cocktail in hand. Cape Rey Resort’s summer concert series is in full swing and the last Thursday of each month good vibes are belted out around the pool. The upbeat essence of my staycation was just beginning to unfold.
I listened to my favorite hits performed by Steal Dawn and munched on Capeside poke (made with sushi grade ahi) and an artisan cheese platter delightfully paired with fig mostarda jam and fresh fruit. No need for the umbrella overhead at poolside as the sun went down and the music played on while I sipped a handcrafted cocktail.
Coastal Carlsbad is always on tourists’ radar, with Legoland, the Del Mar Racetrack, Museum of Making Music, and the Gemological Institute of America nearby. Cape Rey makes a point of connecting with the community and the concert series is the right venue, in addition to offering weddings and conferences. The night I was there, many locals were swaying to the music and enjoying neighborly conversation around the fire pits.
Besides live music, Cape Rey has much to offer for a fun getaway. Families and friends will like hotel led nature walks, renting bikes and packing a picnic to make the most of the beach front property. A few miles away, Seaside Market has high quality items for a beach barbeque and on the way stop at Leucadia Donuts for apple-fritter and sprinkle-donut treats. If lazing around the walk-in pool is on the agenda, cabanas are available along with food and beverage service. For those who just have to work remotely, the modern lobby is well equipped with portals and seating in an open and inviting environment. Not sure which activities are the right fit, the concierge will be glad to assist and make reservations, especially for popular adventures.
In-house Chandler’s restaurant is in the capable hands of culinary director and chef Teri McIllwain. With long time roots in the San Diego area, local and coastal foods are on her mind and plate. Serious about her farm to table ingredients, a produce truck arrives in front of the hotel where she selects the best and freshest produce. I commented to my server about the tasty salsa, and she told me it was made on premises with specially selected ingredients. Now that sounds just like Chef Teri.
Live music on the terrace and carefully prepared foods from Chandler’s restaurant does make for a much enjoyable time. Be sure to partake in one or all of these summer 2016 concerts:
