This country is home to some 40 institutions of higher education, including eight universitie, five technological universities, and several institues and colleges. And it´s ranked number six in the world in terms of the quality of its system of higher education, with high standards of academic excellence, student satisfaction, and post-graduation employment prospects. And as such, Ireland attracts tens of thousands of foreign students each year; the most recent published figure is nearly 45,000 for the 2024/2025 academic year, up ten percent from the previous year, and it´s estimated that as many as 10,000 of these receive some degree of scholarship support, from partial to full.
While there are multiple scholarships to choose from, many prospective candidates fail to know about one particular aspect of their scholarship process, and that is eligibility for scholarships. Without meeting the eligibility criteria, students will not be eligible to receive the scholarship necessary to support their studies abroad at their chosen universities. Following is some information to provide some clarity on the matter and look at some examples of full scholarships for international students looking study on the Emerald Isle.
Different Sources to Get a Scholarship in Ireland
These are provided by different entities, and are sometimes a collaboration between two different entities. Here are some different sources to apply for scholarships to study in Ireland, making it general for all international students:
Government-Funded Scholarships
The Government of Ireland has a scholarship available for international students, called the “Government of Ireland International Education Scholarship.” It is one of the most prestigious scholarships managed by the Higher Education Authority (HEA). Students in both master’s and doctoral programs can apply to get a full tuition waiver with a €10,000 stipend per year.
University-Specific Scholarships
Scholarships are provided by Irish universities to a range of different educational levels. Each scholarship from the Irish universities offers unique advantages to international students from different nationalities. Some cover the entire tuition fee, while others provide partial coverage of the educational costs. Here are some of the options to consider:

Privately-Funded Scholarships
Some students can struggle to get a scholarship from the government or a university, mostly because of limited availability or other factors. In such situations, private entities can also provide scholarships. However, privately-owned scholarships are specific about the eligibility of their applicants and what requirements they have to meet for any particular scholarship. Here are some examples of private and semi-state organisations that provide scholarships in Ireland:
The Walsh Fellowship
Irish Research Council Scholarship
The Central Bank of Ireland Undergraduate Scholarship
