Founded in 1984 by local artist Sharon McKemie-Bauer, Ptarmigan Arts started as a retail art gallery with rental studio spaces for artists. Over the years, it has evolved into a cooperative gallery, a shift that took place in 2013 and has since fostered a close-knit community of artists actively involved in the gallery's operations.
Since its founding, 230 artists have sold their work at Ptarmigan Arts, making it a true hub of creativity. Today, Ptarmigan Arts is home to 38 talented artists, each of whom rents and manages their own space within the gallery.
The cooperative structure of Ptarmigan Arts creates a unique and personal experience for visitors. Not only are you greeted by an impressive selection of artwork, but you may also meet the artists who often work in the gallery.
It's a model that fosters collaboration and community as artists take on roles beyond creating art—they also work as cashiers, manage bookkeeping, and help maintain the gallery. This hands-on approach allows the artists to take a larger share of the profits from their sales, with a modest 14% commission going toward gallery expenses.
