For some travelers, the ultimate vacation luxury isn't a five-star suite, private plunge pool, or Michelin-starred restaurant. It's the freedom to leave their clothes behind. Nudist—or, as enthusiasts generally prefer, naturist—travel has long been a fixture of European tourism, but today's options extend from enormous cruise ships and sophisticated Caribbean resorts to secluded Mediterranean coves. And while some destinations cater to adults seeking a more uninhibited atmosphere, traditional naturism emphasizes body acceptance, relaxation, and communion with nature rather than sexuality.

Nude Cruises: Another Kind of "Bareboating"

Specialist operator Bare Necessities Tour & Travel's Big Nude Boat (above) sails once a year, and on February 15–26, 2027 will take over Norwegian Cruise Line's Norwegian Jewel (Norwegian Crown Jewels?) for an 11-night Caribbean sail departing Miami, with stops including the Bahamas, Puerto Rico, and the British Virgin Islands; fares start at USD$2,000. Bare Necessities has been organizing nude cruises since 1990, helping turn what might once have sounded like a novelty into an established naturist vacation niche.

Life aboard is much like a conventional cruise, with swimming, sunbathing, dining, entertainment, and socializing—except that passengers can enjoy most activities in the altogether. There are, however, a few rules: clothing is required while docked in port, during the captain's reception, and in the main and specialty dining rooms, though the self-service buffet is clothing-optional. Naked passengers must also sit on towels, and photographing others without permission is prohibited. Casual attire is perfectly acceptable whenever clothing is required.

And the Caribbean isn't the only option. In Europe there´s a growing selection of smaller-scale naturist cruises, particularly along Croatia's Adriatic Sea coast, where weeklong voyages combine nude sunbathing and swimming in secluded coves with visits to historic coastal towns. Operators such as CroatiaUp offer 2027 departures starting around €1,000 per person, while specialist companies also organize clothing-optional sailing holidays around the Greek islands and Italian coast.

And prospective passengers should understand an important distinction: these are social-nudity vacations, not sex cruises. With another Big Nude Boat just months away, naturist cruising provides perhaps the most striking example of how specialized—and ambitious—nude travel has become.

Naturist Getaways: From Rustic Campgrounds to Upscale Resorts

Naturist vacations aren't necessarily about roughing it in a tent anymore. Travelers can choose among self-catering villas, comfortable resort accommodations, spas, and organized recreational activities.

France is the powerhouse in this area, with some 230 organized naturist sites, the most notable including Euronat and CHM Montalivet on the Atlantic coast offering established naturist villages amid beaches and pine forests. So is Germany, thanks to its FKK (Freikörperkultur, "free body culture") legacy stretching back well over a century, where there are nearly three dozen naturist campsites, with notable examples such as FKK Camping Ostsee up out the Baltic coast; FKK Campingplatz am Rätzsee (above) in the Mecklenburg Lake District, straddling three northern German states; and FKK-Zeltplatz Amrum on the coast of the North Sea. The Croatian Adriatic is another longstanding favorite, with properties such as Naturist Camp Valalta, near Rovinj on the Istrian Peninsula, while Vera Playa in Almería, Spain combines clothing-optional beachgoing with conventional resort amenities.

And the sector has also shown some naked strength: French operator France 4 Naturisme reported nearly 30,000 stays and approximately 700,000 overnight stays in 2026 - a two-percent increase in stays over the previous year.

Across the Atlantic Ocean, the United States boasts by far the largest selection of naturist resorts in the Americas (up to 150, by one count), with perhaps the most prominent example being 61-year-old Cypress Cove in Kissimmee, Florida. A distant second in the Caribbean, which has around 20 properties, including small naturist guesthouses and conventional resorts with designated nude areas. The biggest player here is the upscale, adults-only Hedonism II resort in Negril, Jamaica, which also goes beyond just nudity to offer a frisky sexual temperature. Mexico, is home to , some 15 dedicated naturist resorts, clothing-optional boutique hotels, and adults-only lifestyle propreties; one especially prominent example is the Riviera Maya´s Hidden Beach Au Naturel Resort.

Nude Beaches: Going Au Naturel Without Going Whole Hog

The most accessible option out there, though, is simply visiting a clothing-optional beach, without committing to an entire naturist vacation.

In Europe, Spain is the clear winner on volume alone, as well as impressive on quality; its official tourism website identifies more than 400 beaches where people can sun in the buff (Tripatini covered 21 of them here). Among the standouts are Torimbia, a spectacular crescent-shaped beach up north in Asturias (chilly water, though!); El Torn, near Tarragona, with its dunes and pine groves; and Maspalomas, on Gran Canaria, also famous for its dunes and where designated stretches of beach welcome nude sunbathers (and there´s also a LGBTQ - mostly gay male - element, too).

FKK-crazy Germany is right up there, too, with as many as 300 naturist beaches and bathing spots nationwide; perhaps the best known is Buhne 16, on the North Sea island of Sylt, which became a celebrated gathering place for West Germany's naturists in the 1960s and 1970s and these days is a fashionable, clothing-optional stretch of sand where nude and swimsuit-clad beachgoers mingle, Sylt also has numerous designated naturist sections elsewhere on the island. Two other prominenet beachs on the Baltic Sea coast are Ahlbeck FKK Strand on Usedom Island and Warnemünde FKK Strand near Rostock.

France is a (distant) third, with 73 designated naturist plages, the best known of which is the one at the naturist village of Cap d'Agde toward the western end of the Côte d´Azur; other top contenders are the wild beach near seven naturiste villages in the small town of Leucate, an hour south along the coast from Cap d´Agde; and of course the beach associated with the above mentioned CHM Montalivet.

And finally, Croatia´s coast, in addition to the strand at the abovementioned Valalta Naturist Camp, also features the likes of Saharska Plaža (Sahara Beach) on the island of Rab (a wilder, less resort-oriented experience, reached on foot rather than by car) and the one at Koversada near the Istrian Peninsula town of Vrsar, part of one of Europe's most historic naturist destinations, associated with organized naturism since the early 1960s (yes, the days of Communist Yugoslavia).

In North America there are rather fewer. The United States is estimated to have around 20, with standouts including Haulover, a half hour north of Miami Beach; the New Jersey Shore´s Gunnison Beach, and a section of the spectacular Black's Beach, outside San Diego, California. In Canada, apart from a handful of "unofficial" spots scattered across the country, there are three to speak of: Vancouver´s Wreck Beach; Little Tribune Bay on Hornby Island across the harbor from Vancouver; and Hanlan's Point Beach in Toronto. Down in Mexico, there are several beaches associated with resorts such as the previously mentioned Hidden Beach, but for public beaches, the only authorized place is the mile-long strand in the boho town of Zipolite, with a decades-old naturist culture, hotels, restaurants, and even an annual nudist festival in late January (it´s also popular with the LGBTQ crowd).

Add to these another 15 or so throughout the Caribbean. Besides private beaches attached to resorts like Hedonism, public clothing-optional beaches are most likely to be found in the French Caribbean, including St-Martin, Guadeloupe, and Martinique, such as St.Martin´s Baie Orient and Guadeloupe´s Anse Tarare.
