The Serra de Tramuntana in Majorca is dotted with beautiful towns and a special charm, but if there were one town on the Costa Nord (North Coast) which you must not forget in your trip through the region, it would without doubt be Valldemossa. This small town is beautiful at any time of the year, but it is perhaps best enjoyed in wintertime when tranquility invades its cobbled streets decorated with potted plants or colorful tiles in honor of Saint Catherine. In fact, if you are lucky enough to visit Valldemossa on one of the few occasions in the year when it has snowed, you will have one of the most picture-postcard views of the town, with the Serra de Tramuntana covered with a white blanket.
The careful layout of its urban core contains steep streets, stone structures and important religious buildings among lush vegetation. In just a few kilometers, the mountains of this area turn into lovely beaches and coves. The port of Valldemossa retains the character of a former fishing town. Fresh fish and inland produce combine perfectly to offer the tourist the most succulent recipes.
The Real Cartuja, an old XIV century Carthusian monastery, famous for having been the residence of the writer Georg Sand (“A Winter in Majorca”) and the composer Chopin, is a must see. Special mention should be made of its bell tower, covered in blue-toned tiles which change depending on the sun’s rays. The rear gardens of the monastery offer a pleasant walk scattered with amateur painters. The sculptures of Chopin and Arxiduc Lluís Salvador are found in this setting. Other well-known people as famous as Rubén Darío, Jorge Luis Borges, Jovellanos and Santiago Rusiñol spent periods in the monastery. The Municipal Museum and the old drug store are also worth a visit. As are the parish church of Saint Bartholomew, the Palace of King Sancho and the Miranda des LLadoners. If you take a trip to these locations you will need to bring extra film for your camera!
To restore your energy, you must not forget to try the most characteristic sweet dish of this part of Majorca, the coca de patata (a potato bun), a delicacy which must always be consumed with a slushie or almond horchata (a tiger nut milk drink).
Ultimately, Valldemossa is a fantastic place to visit calmly, losing yourself in its narrow streets and stopping at every façade and every view presented by the pine, holm oak, olive and carob trees which surround the Tramuntana mountain range.
