Tipping is not expected in Vietnam, but it is anyway, highly appreciated. A 5-10% tip for a meal is a very small amount of money. Avoid tipping too much, as it will set a precedent for others.

It is customary, though not compulsory, to tip tour guides and drivers at the end of a tour. Hotel and station porters should also be tipped, about 2 - 5 usd / day, depending on the service.

I'm often asked what the tipping guidelines are in other countries. I would like to say to use the guidelines that we use here in the U.S. The truth is that sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Every country has different guidelines. Some places a few dollars may be fine or a couple of dollars. In other places, a few dollars may get snubbed.

How many times have all of us reached into our pockets for some money to tip a baggage handler, tour guide etc. and all we have are large bills. My wife came up with the idea of before leaving on any of our trips, that we go to the bank and in our case (United States) get 100 one dollar bills.
