Kites of Sumpango

Small town near Guatemala City and Antigua lives for the Festival of gigantic kites. This tradition exists in some parts of Guatemala for a long time now. To be there on Day of the dead is quite a unique experience...

Idea to make gigantic kite, more than twenty meters in diameter that will never fly may sound crazy. But, when you come to the festival, it seems so logical and nice; colors, pictures and messages that can be seen on every single one of the kites exhibited here create special atmosphere. It makes perfect sense between green hills and mystic volcanoes that surround the site. Yep, that's it.

While small kites in the sky talk directly to the ancestors, gigantic kites talk with the living. And they tell the tales of family values, non-violence, children that need to be fed, love for life that emerges here, there and everywhere in Guatemala.

There is a piece of the future in those narrow streets of Sumpango, in its rugged and unfinished houses, in the gazes of the local people selling you everything that exist on this wide world. It is not just mere optimism; it is not just expectation or hope. It is a future itself brought by the spirit of ancient Maya and reality of children's smiles all around you.

I admit, I go to Sumpango every year to pick up that positive energy; I'm a leecher myself.

Hospitality, great food, smiles or music are just a scenography of that hidden generator of the particles of pure happiness that you are bombarded with. And even more positive thoughts arrive; being here in this lovely country I know that there are many more places like that.

I really have to write about them.
