When it comes to Croatian islands, many people's minds instantly wander to Hvar - the Adriatic jewel of the Split archipelago.
With its rich history dating back to ancient times, monumental architectural achievements from the Venetian era, and stunning beaches, Hvar stands out as one of the top destinations in Split-Dalmatia County.
The island boasts two significant hubs: the town of Hvar and Stari Grad. Two smaller tourist gems are Jelsa and Vrboska. Let's not forget Sućuraj, a quaint fishing village on the island's eastern tip.
Stari Grad:
Stari Grad on Hvar is known as the oldest settlement on the island, founded in 385 BC as the Roman city of Pharos. Just as it was in Roman times, Stari Grad remains the most urbanized area of Hvar today. It's packed with intriguing cultural attractions and boasts clean seas and beautiful beaches, making it an ideal summer getaway for locals and tourists.
Stari Grad is the main ferry port on Hvar, connecting it to the mainland via the Split-Stari Grad ferry route.
Things to Do in Stari Grad:
Stari Grad left a lasting impression on me as a charming and well-kept destination. It's a relief that even during peak season, this place is more relaxed than other popular spots like Hvar town. Therefore, visitors seeking a peaceful vacation spot can choose Stari Grad. Of course, if you stay in Stari Grad for a few days, a day trip to Hvar town is a fantastic idea.
As I strolled toward Stari Grad, the first exciting attraction I noticed was the Šime Ljubić Palace, located on the southern side of town, near the coast. Another highlight was the Castle of Petar Hektorović, one of Croatia's greatest writers. In the 16th century, this building was a fortress to defend against Turkish invasions.
Simultaneously, the Church of St. Nicholas caught my eye—a small Renaissance building built on the remains of an older Romanesque church. Inside, visitors can admire intriguing artworks like the main altar and paintings. The most monumental building in town is the Church of St. Stephen, also built in the Renaissance style.
Hvar Town:
Hvar Town is the island's top destination. During the summer, this place transforms into a haven for glamorous celebrities; Michael Jordan was recently spotted here. With glamour comes high prices—the centre of Hvar Town ranks among Croatia's priciest tourist destinations in the summer. Hence, many visitors prefer to visit outside the peak tourist season for a more budget-friendly experience.
Things to Do in Hvar Town:
As soon as I stepped off the bus in Hvar Town, I noticed two monumental and impressive buildings. The first was the Španjola Fortress, located in the upper part of town, and the second was the Cathedral of St. Stephen, just a hundred meters from the bus station.
While the current cathedral building dates back to the Baroque period, it's known to have been constructed in earlier eras. Visitors can explore numerous fascinating artworks inside the cathedral, including altars, statues, and paintings. Entry to the cathedral is free.
After touring the cathedral, I strolled along the waterfront promenade. The atmosphere was fantastic. Every few hundred meters, I came across a beach—some well-manicured. In contrast, others remained in their natural rocky state, shaped by the forces of nature and sea waves. Nearby, I spotted several luxury hotels.
Visiting Španjola Fortress:
Upon returning to the town centre, I visited one of its main attractions, Španjola Fortress. It took me about twenty minutes to walk uphill to reach the fortress. I recommend wearing sneakers while hiking to the fortress for added comfort. Along the way, I passed through a beautiful Mediterranean park filled with plants typical of the region. As I returned to town, I explored several other monumental buildings. The Church of St. Spirit caught my attention—a Renaissance-style building. Unfortunately, the summer residence of the renowned Croatian poet Hanibal Lucić was closed to visitors.
Boat Tours Form Split to Hvar
To get to the island of Hvar, you can take exclusive private tours from Split to Hvar or a day boat excursion like the famous Blue Cave And Five Islands, where you'll enjoy breathtaking views of the Adriatic Sea and prepare for an unforgettable adventure.
Once you set foot on the island, you'll be struck by its old-world charm. With its cobblestone streets and Venetian-inspired architecture, the town of Hvar takes you back in time to a bygone era. You'll discover hidden churches, charming squares, and bustling marketplaces as you explore the narrow streets. Every nook and cranny of Hvar is picture-perfect, so bring your camera along!

Experience the Vibrant Nightlife of Hvar Town
When it comes to nightlife on the island of Hvar, the spotlight undoubtedly falls on Hvar Town, which has become a city that never sleeps - at least from June to September. There's a wide selection of places to go out. Still, you're looking for a quieter atmosphere or prefer fewer crowds. In that case, Jelsa is an ideal alternative (with several cafes and restaurants). Stari Grad and Vrboska are more modest settlements than other places on the island.
During the summer, the nightlife of Hvar Town is one of the liveliest on the Adriatic coast. The city exudes a unique atmosphere, and there's always something happening. The fun lasts until the early morning hours, and guests can visit numerous events, restaurants, taverns, clubs, and more.
As the sea and air temperatures peak and the port becomes crowded with numerous boats, Hvar Town becomes one of the most sought-after destinations for young people looking for entertainment.
However, the atmosphere of the city changes from month to month, along with the different structures and ages of the visitors, making Hvar enjoyable to visit in various periods.
Excluding July and August (when the city sees the most visitors), the buzz on the streets is noticeable as early as May. It lasts until mid-October, allowing plenty of time for quieter city tours and enjoying the beaches without overcrowding. This time is ideal for visitors who are less concerned about vibrant nightlife and are more interested in leisurely strolls, sipping coffee, enjoying the gastronomic offerings, and soaking in the city's ambience. July and August are for those who love crowded streets, restaurants, beaches, and parties until the early hours.
The city's popularity among the younger population has undoubtedly increased thanks to the famous club "Carpe Diem." However, there are other bars and clubs in Hvar Town that you should definitely visit during your stay.
"Caffeine" or "Loco Bar" are ideal places for a morning cup of coffee and reading newspapers or books. After coffee, take one of the small taxi boats to the nearby Paklinski Islands, where you'll find a spot on one of the small beaches and enjoy the sun and swimming.
Carpe Diem Beach Bar: Here, you'll meet young people with whom you'll dance to the rhythm of Latin music at the famous "after-beach party" at "Carpe Diem Beach" (owned by the same team as "Carpe Diem" in Hvar Town). When you return to Hvar Town, the evening gathering is in one of the many bars, such as "Archie's Bar" or "Atelier."
If you're up for a louder and more vibrant night out, don't miss a visit to "Kiva," and later, don't forget about the best cocktail bar "Carpe Diem." A rich and diverse experience should end at the club "Veneranda," with the most beautiful sunrise view.
Carpe Diem: A perfectly designed place with an unforgettable atmosphere. Choose from a rich selection of cocktails and enjoy on a large terrace adorned with greenery at sunset and moonlight.
Carpe Diem Beach: A summer beach club in the bay of Stipanska, open during July and August, accessible by taxi boats from Hvar. Enjoy tropical cocktails and light food, play beach volleyball, and relax in the shade of pine trees with a view of the pool and the beautiful sea.
Veneranda: The Veneranda bar is located within the walls of the former monastery, with a small pool and a dance floor. Here, you'll listen to electronic music and be amazed by the view from the terrace at an unforgettable sunrise.
Hula Hula: A 15-minute walk west of the city centre, on the coast between the hotels "Amfora" and "Podstine," you'll find this rustic wooden beach bar. Enjoy the beautiful sunset view and chill-out music.

After exploring Stari Grad and Hvar Town, I'm confident I'm impressed by these places and the island. It's clear why Hvar is considered the most attractive island in Croatian tourism and the world.
