On the coast of Bahia 82 kilometres north of Salvador, the town and beach of Praia do Forte are situated in a protected area with 12 km. of almost deserted beaches surrounded by lush plantations. It enjoys a privileged location close to the Mata Atlântica Biosphere Reserve, lagoons, beaches where the sea turtles lay their eggs, coral reefs, and places to observe humpback whales.
If you go to Praia do Forte, you should not miss the chance to take a deep-sea excursion to see these magnificent cetaceans, which are one of the largest species of whale. Between July and October, local tour companies organize deep-sea excursions to see these creatures. Before embarking at the Humpback Whale (Baleia Jubart) Institute, a talk on these mammals is given. The aim, apart from explaining the necessary safety information, is to impart some knowledge about the marine ecosystem and the whales’ habitat, behavior, and way of life. Humpback whales, which measure 16 meters and weigh up to 40 tons, make an annual journey of almost 4,500 kilometers to Antarctica, where they stay for most of the year searching for krill – the crustacean they feed on.
The group of humpbacks that migrates to Brazil’s tropical waters during the southern winter to mate and give birth was thought to be completely extinct in 1980. The resurgence of the population is a direct consequence of the end of commercial hunting, and also of the studies that enabled a better understanding of these creatures. This led to the launch of preservation campaigns, including redefining shipping routes and establishing sanctuaries.
Do not let this experience pass you by, since it is probably one of the most beautiful spectacles in nature.
