The cultural travel revolution has been sweeping across the internet recently. This involves shifting the purpose of your holiday from solely relaxing to taking time to understand the local culture, history, beliefs and lived experiences.

If you are looking to change the way you holiday, here are some destinations where you can absorb as much culture as possible this summer.

Tokyo: A blend of tradition and modern culture

Tokyo is the heart of Japan, where tech meets history in a seamless melting pot. Tokyo holidays definitely should be on your family's bucket list.

Wandering through the city will take you past modern karaoke bars and ancient temples side by side. Make sure you have time in your itinerary for a kabuki show, one of Japan's most impressive art forms. If you are travelling with kids, they will want to visit the city's amazing Disneyland Park.

Barcelona: Street festivals and artistic heritage

For somewhere a bit closer to home, Barcelona is the ideal destination to dip your toe into cultural travel.

The streets of the bustling city are full of artistic curiosities. Gaudí is perhaps the most well-known artist and architect from the area, and evidence of his creativity is everywhere. Park Güell and the Sagrada Familia are both examples of the feats this man achieved.

Cruïlla 2026 Festival is going to be held in early July this year and is a celebration of all things music, art, comedy and dance – definitely worth getting tickets!

Marrakech: Markets, music and Moroccan traditions

You would be hard-pressed to find somewhere as vibrant as Marrakech. From the moment you land, your senses will be engulfed by colours, smells and sounds that are very different from life in the UK.

One of the most famous things about Marrakech is the vast markets. Here you can find everything, so it's time to practice haggling and get some bargains for your loved ones at home.

For an insight into Morocco's culture, visit The World Storytelling Café to listen to wonderful tales spun by expert storytellers, a real gem in the country's traditions.

Rome: Ancient history and Italian culture

Rome is known for the many examples of architecture created under the Roman Empire and more. The Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps and the Pantheon are all worth visiting, but the Colosseum is a real highlight.

The Colosseum is a striking image, marking the skyline with its ancient feel, contrasting with the modern buildings around it. Adults and kids alike will be whisked away into a world of gladiators and heroes when visiting.

No visit to Rome would be complete without enjoying some fresh pizza or pasta. One tip is to try to stay away from restaurants near tourist attractions to get an authentic experience. Don't forget to grab a refreshing gelato to keep cool in the summer sunshine, too!
