Although it’s true that combining sightseeing and a busy nightlife is not an easy task, everyone can find the time to enjoy an evening drink and then who knows how things might liven up later on! It’s important to remember that in Budapest people tend to have dinner fairly early on – around 8 p.m. -, so by 9 p.m. nightspots including discos, pubs and clubs and so on are normally open.
After dinner, there can be nothing better than taking the time to admire the magnificent views of Budapest by night. Once the sun sets, one of the most attractive options is to take a river trip along the Danube. The Hungarian Parliament building or Buda Castle are just a few of the buildings that take on a whole new appearance when floodlit.
The centre of Buda is undoubtedly the most popular district when it comes to the city’s nightlife, attracting the vast majority of first-time visitors. They’re drawn by the lively atmosphere and the countless terraces, bars and restaurants, which, as the evening progresses, turn into spectacular discos. One of the best-known night spots in this area is Club Seven, a disco where the music is mainly dance and funky….and which is always packed with people.
Young people tend to start the evening in Liszt Ferenc Square, Saint Stephen Square or on Raday Street, as it is here that we can find the city’s quieter terraces and bars. However, there are evening venues to suit all tastes, ranging from sedate bars with live jazz music to amazing discos famed for their serious partying.
Most of the pubs and discos are situated in old rambling houses known as Ruin pubs (Romkocsma in Hungarian) – although the façade differs radically from what you’ll find inside. Examples include Szimpla Kert, which occasionally puts on live jazz performances and exhibitions, Kuplung, with its Boho music and great sounds, and some even have kitchens or double up as a hostel, like Grandio. Corvintetö boasts one of the most breathtaking views of the city, whilst Fogasház organises concerts practically every day.
Visitors can also enjoy the performances at the Budapest Opera House and the city’s theatres. And if you fancy a trying your hand at some games of chance and a little gambling, you’ll find casinos in the luxury hotels that line Dunakorzó Street.
Boredom or not knowing what to do is out of the question when it comes to Budapest’s nightlife; there’s always something new and different to try.
And if you’d like to round off the evening just like the residents of Budapest do, then at first light it’s time to visit one of the many thermal baths to be found in the Hungarian capital, perfect for winding down before heading home for bed.
