Arizona is a state that fits into a lot of categories, with outstanding natural beauty, delicious food, and a thriving art scene, amongst other things - so it truly has something for everyone. We want to show you what places in the Copper State will appeal to you most, no matter who you are or what you love to do.
(But first, here’s a quick packing list: Loose, comfortable clothing and walking shoes; sunscreen; a reusable water bottle (in this desert climate, you'll need to hydrate more than you're probably used to); and of course, if you're travelling from one of the countries that require one - which is most of them, with 38 exceptions - a USA visa!)
Best for Art Lovers: Sedona
This artists’ paradise - often called the most beautiful city in America - is bound to get the creative juices flowing and inspire you to create a masterpiece. However, if you’d prefer to admire art, Sedona is home to over 80 galleries and independent artists’ shops, with many located close enough to walk between. (Check out the city’s Art Walk guides here.)
Best for Hikers: The Painted Desert
Much of this geological marvel in the badlands is only accessible via foot, making it the perfect excursion for anyone wanting to experience the natural beauty of this state whilst getting in his or her steps for the day. Make sure to take your camera to truly capture this “wonderland of colours”.
Best for Festival Goers: Tucson
There are numerous fairs, festivals, and other cultural event that take place in Tucson every year, from the Tucson Festival of Books, the fourth largest book festival in the US with 80,000 attendees, to the All Souls Procession Weekend, which marks the Mexican Day of the Dead holiday and attracts around 50,000 people.
Best for Modern-History Buffs: Page
If you prefer to learn about the ordinary lives of average Americans during a set time period, check out this town near Lake Powell in the state's far north. Page was purpose-built in 1957 for workers to live in, with their families, whilst constructing the Glen Canyon Dam on the Colorado River, and it makes a great base for the many ecotourism and adventure options nearby.
Best for Those Who Love Guided Tours: Antelope Canyon
This beautiful spot, which features an upper and lower canyon, is accessible only through Navajo lands, and visitors must come as part of a guided tour. While it can be a little challenging to hike through these canyons - even with the addition of stairs - the beauty of the area and the knowledge of the tour guide is enough to bring visitors back time and time again.
Best for Waterfalls: Grand Canyon
Yes, the Grand Canyon. Tucked away in this vast fissure is Havasu Falls, a single-stream waterfall with a 100-foot drop. Visitors can enjoy a picnic, swim in the lake, or even camp out overnight beside these gorgeous falls.
Best for Foodies: Phoenix
There are many reasons to visit the capital, set right in the midst of the Valley of the Sun, but one of the best has to be its food. Like many major cities, Phoenix is a melting pot for every type of cuisine from Korean to Cajun, Greek to Japanese, Persian to French, all with a southwest twist. However, thanks to its proximity with the Mexican border, Phoenix excels at Mexican food above all else.
There are of course more than 7 beautiful and fun places to visit in Arizona, but these are a good start. Enjoy your trip!
