A Guide to Car Rental in the Seychelles

Many tourists traveling to Seychelles now choose to rent a car instead of relying on taxis and guided tours as they can be incredibly expensive. Due to this, the number of car rent Seychelles companies has been steadily increasing and even international agencies are now opening small branches in the main Seychelles islands which include Mahe and Praslin.

Here are the things you will need to be able to rent a car for your holiday or business trip in the Seychelles islands:

  • your passport
  • your driving license; learners will not be accepted
  • your car insurance papers if you already have a car (not mandatory but some agencies may use it to cover damages)

In addition, there are certain things you need to keep in mind about car rental in the Seychelles:

  • Seychelles is actually composed of many islands. You will thus need a boat transfer to take the car from one island to another.
  • The main roads in Seychelles are actually quite good but can be very narrow and there is poor lighting at night. You will thus need to be very careful when driving at night.
  • There is no need to go for extremely powerful cars due to the quality of the roads. Actually, most agencies will just have basic cars, which you should go for.
  • Obviously, if you damage the car you rented, you will be responsible for paying the repair costs.
  • Most car rental agencies have both manual transmission and automatic transmission cars. However, if you want an AT car, you may want to make a reservation early and to specify that you would like a model with automatic transmission.
  • Most car rental agencies will give you a full petrol tank with your booking and will require you to fill up the tank before returning the car. These conditions will be specified in your rental agreement.
