The Jamacho Day Hike is one of the most refreshing and peaceful short hikes near Kathmandu. Located just 5 kilometers west of Thamel, this easy hike takes you into the heart of Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park, offering an escape into pure nature with stunning views and cultural experiences. It is perfect for travelers who want to explore Nepal's greenery, forest trails, and Himalayan scenery – all in one day, without going far from the city.

 

 

The hike begins with a short 20 to 25-minute drive from Thamel to the Nagarjun Gate (Balaju Bypass area). Here, you will register your entry and buy the national park permit (included in our package). From the entrance, you’ll walk uphill through a peaceful forest trail. The total walking distance is about 10 kilometers round trip, and it usually takes 3 to 4 hours to complete the hike, depending on your pace and breaks.

 

 

The trail passes through dense sub-tropical forest filled with tall trees, fresh mountain air, & birdsong. This protected forest is home to many species of wildlife, including monkeys, deer, wild boars, porcupines, and more than 200 birds. If you’re lucky, you might spot some of them along the way. It’s a great hike for nature lovers, bird watchers, & photographers.

 

 

At the top of the hill, you’ll reach the Jamacho Monastery (Gumba), situated at an altitude of around 2,100 meters. This peaceful Buddhist site is often visited by local monks and pilgrims. You can walk around the stupa and prayer flags while enjoying the calm spiritual environment.

 

 

The viewpoint near Jamacho Gumba offers breathtaking views of the entire Kathmandu Valley. On a clear day, you can even see the Langtang Himalayan Range, Ganesh Himal, & other snow-capped peaks in the distance. The combination of greenery, cityscape, and mountain backdrop makes it a magical spot to relax before heading back.
