Founded 89 years ago as a hunting reserve, this remote 660-square-mile swath of savannah way up north - a day's drive or 5½-hour flight from capital Yaoundé, changes over the seasons and offers some great wildlife spotting, including elephants, lions, cheetahs, hyenas, giraffes, and gazelles. Near the regional capital Maroua, it can be visited not just with guided safaris but also driving yourself - but it's a good idea to go with a guide who can help explain the ecosystem and guide you to the best spotting spots. There are bungalows for overnighting.
