Upper Mustang Trek takes trekkers to the northern part of Nepal which shares the border with Tibet, the Autonomous Region of China. The site has close cultural and religious tie with Tibet since the time of yore. The almost entire population of this area follows Tibetan Buddhism as most of the people leaving here are descendants of Tibet. The deserted part from the Tibetan part to the south of Kagbeni is known as Upper Mustang. The high mountains here block monsoon rain and due to this, it is considered a rain-shaded area.
There are many things to explore in Upper Mustang, especially for explorers and archaeologists. The ruins and monasteries here are the main subject of research for them. The caves here are more than 1000 years old and have significance to human civilization.
Trekking to Upper Mustang starts from Kagbeni. It (Kagbeni) is known as Entrance to Upper Mustang. Annapurna Conservation Area protects this place. The trail goes till Lo-Manthang crossing the world’s deepest gorge at Dana. The view of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and Nilgiri is mesmerizing for any trekkers. Mustang is rich in culture and tradition. Tiki is their main festival. Brothers of the same family marry a girl and this is a perfect example of polyandry which is commonly seen in Mustang.
