How to Plan a Family Trip to Bhutan in 2025 – 2026

13453039491?profile=RESIZE_710x

Visiting Bhutan is a remarkable adventure, especially when shared with family. Exploring new places together creates lasting memories, making the journey even more special. Bhutan is a rare treasure, unlike any other destination, where nature is cherished, and the well-being of its people takes precedence over material wealth. Bhutan is the perfect choice if your family enjoys discovering unique destinations and embracing new experiences.

Surrounded by pristine nature, you’ll experience an authentic cultural immersion in a country that values tradition and sustainability. Bhutan is also one of the safest travel destinations, making it an ideal spot for a family getaway. If you’re considering Bhutan for your next family vacation, here are some key things to know while planning your trip.

Where is Bhutan?

13469555091?profile=RESIZE_710x

If geography isn’t your strong suit and you’re unfamiliar with Asian culture and history, you may have little to no knowledge about Bhutan. This small South Asian nation is nestled deep within the eastern Himalayas. Surrounded by towering mountains, Bhutan remained largely isolated from the world until the late 20th century. It was only in the 1970s that the Fourth King of Bhutan introduced tourism, but even today, the country remains well-protected and not easily accessible.

Bhutan is a constitutional monarchy, with the King serving as the head of state and the prime minister leading the government. It shares its northern border with the Tibet Autonomous Region of China, while its eastern, southern, and western borders connect with the Indian states of West Bengal, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, and Assam. Located at 27° North latitude and 90° East longitude, Bhutan is a landlocked country within the Himalayan range. The nation follows a single time zone, which is six hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).

How to Plan an Incredible Family Trip to Bhutan in 2025/2026

13453041686?profile=RESIZE_710x

Bhutan, with its breathtaking landscapes, rich culture, and strong emphasis on happiness, is a perfect destination for a family adventure. If you're planning a trip to this Himalayan kingdom in 2025 or 2026, here’s a step-by-step guide to help you make the most of your journey.

1. Understand Bhutan’s Unique Travel Policy

Bhutan follows a "High-Value, Low-Impact" tourism policy, which ensures a sustainable and immersive experience. Visitors are required to pay a Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) per night, which contributes to the country’s conservation and development. As of recent updates, the fee is $100 per night per adult, while children between 6-12 years pay 50%, and kids below 6 are exempt. Check for any updates to this policy before booking.

2. Choose the Best Time to Visit

  • Spring (March-May): Ideal for blooming flowers, festivals, and pleasant weather.
  • Autumn (September-November): Clear skies, stunning mountain views, and popular festivals like Thimphu Tshechu.
  • Winter (December-February): Fewer crowds, lower SDF rates, and a chance to see rare black-necked cranes.
  • Monsoon (June-August): Lush greenery but expect some rain, best for budget travelers.

3. Book Your Trip Through a Licensed Bhutanese Tour Operator

Independent travel isn’t allowed in Bhutan, so you must book your trip through an authorized tour operator. Choose a reputable Bhutanese travel agency that can customize your itinerary based on your family's interests.

4. Plan Your Itinerary with Family-Friendly Destinations

Bhutan offers plenty of activities for families, from nature hikes to cultural experiences. Some must-visit places include:

  • Paro – Home to the iconic Tiger’s Nest Monastery (Paro Taktsang), a moderate trek suitable for older kids and teenagers.
  • Thimphu – Bhutan’s capital, offering attractions like the Buddha Dordenma Statue, the Folk Heritage Museum, and the Motithang Takin Preserve to see Bhutan’s national animal.
  • Punakha – Visit the beautiful Punakha Dzong, take a short hike to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten, and enjoy river rafting on the Mo Chhu River.
  • Phobjikha Valley – A scenic valley perfect for nature walks and spotting black-necked cranes (if visiting in winter).

5. Prepare Travel Documents & Flight Bookings

  • Visa: Tour operators will arrange your Bhutan visa. Ensure all passports are valid for at least six months beyond your travel date.
  • Flights: Bhutan’s only international airport is in Paro. Flights are operated by Drukair and Bhutan Airlines from cities like Bangkok, Delhi, Kathmandu, and Singapore.
  • Travel Insurance: Highly recommended, especially if trekking or engaging in outdoor activities.

6. Pack Smart for Bhutan’s Climate

  • Comfortable walking shoes (especially for treks and monastery visits).
  • Layered clothing (mornings and nights can be cold, even in summer).
  • Rain gear if visiting during the monsoon season.
  • Medications and personal essentials, as pharmacies are limited outside major towns.

7. Experience Bhutanese Culture & Cuisine

  • Try traditional Bhutanese dishes like Ema Datshi (spicy chili and cheese), Momos (dumplings), and Suja (butter tea).
  • Dress modestly when visiting monasteries and dzongs.
  • Participate in local experiences like archery, weaving, or a traditional hot stone bath.

8. Respect Local Customs & Sustainability Practices

  • Bhutan values its environment and cultural heritage. Follow Leave No Trace principles.
  • Avoid plastic waste; carry a refillable water bottle.
  • Respect local traditions—always seek permission before taking photos of monks or religious sites.

Final Thoughts:

Bhutan is a magical destination for families looking to explore nature, culture, and a unique way of life. By planning ahead, booking with a trusted tour operator, and embracing the country's sustainable tourism approach, you’ll create unforgettable memories with your loved ones.

13441204469?profile=RESIZE_710x

Bhutan Visa Process

If you’re planning to visit Bhutan, you can obtain a visa in two ways:

  1. Through a Licensed Bhutanese Tour Operator – Most travelers book their trip through a local tour company, which will handle the visa process on your behalf.
  2. Applying Online – You can also apply for a visa yourself via Bhutan’s official online visa portal.

Visa Requirements:

  • Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay.
  • Your passport should have at least one blank page for the visa stamp.
  • The visa fee is USD 40 (non-refundable).
  • You must pay the full Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) in advance to obtain the visa.

Visa Rules for Indian, Bangladeshi, and Maldivian Nationals

  • Indian Nationals:
    • Can enter Bhutan without a passport, using their Voter ID as an alternative.
    • Must pay an SDF of INR 1,200 per night.
    • If entering and exiting on the same day, the SDF is waived.
  • Bangladeshi & Maldivian Nationals:
    • Eligible for visa-on-arrival at the entry point.
    • Required to pay the SDF fee per night.

Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) in Bhutan

To promote sustainable tourism and control tourist inflow, Bhutan implements a Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) per night of stay.

  • Standard SDF: USD 100 per person per night (for most foreign tourists).
  • Children’s SDF Discounts:
    • Ages 6-12: 50% discount (USD 50 per night).
    • Below 6 years: Exempt from SDF.

Where Does the SDF Go?

The revenue from the SDF is used for: ✅ Free healthcare and education for Bhutanese citizens. ✅ Vocational training programs for youth. ✅ Conservation and sustainable tourism initiatives.

When planning your Bhutan trip for 2025/2026, ensure that your visa and SDF payments are completed in advance to avoid any last-minute hassles.

When is the best time to plan your family trip to Bhutan?

13450244275?profile=RESIZE_710x

The best time to travel to Bhutan is during autumn and spring, as these seasons offer the most pleasant weather and stunning landscapes. However, each season has its charm, depending on your preferences.

1. Autumn (September - November) 🍂

✅ Clear skies and breathtaking mountain views. ✅ Ideal for trekking and sightseeing. ✅ Major festivals like Thimphu Tshechu and Jambay Lhakhang Drup take place.

2. Spring (March - May) 🌸

✅ Blooming flowers, including rhododendrons, make landscapes vibrant. ✅ Comfortable temperatures for travel and outdoor activities.Paro Tshechu, one of Bhutan’s most famous festivals, is celebrated.

3. Summer (June - August) ☔

✅ Lush green landscapes after monsoon rains. ✅ Fewer crowds and lower travel costs. ✅ Rain can affect travel plans, but it’s a good time for those seeking solitude.

4. Winter (December - February)

✅ Crisp air, clear skies, and fewer tourists. ✅ Ideal for cultural exploration and spotting black-necked cranes in Phobjikha Valley. ✅ Cold temperatures, especially in higher altitudes, so warm clothing is essential.

Experience Bhutan’s Festivals:

13469556278?profile=RESIZE_710x

Bhutan hosts at least one major festival every month, many of which are religious Buddhist celebrations. These Tshechus (festivals) are held in monasteries and last for several days.

  • Locals dress in colorful traditional attire.
  • Monks perform masked dances and skits to the rhythm of traditional music.
  • A great opportunity to witness Bhutanese culture and spirituality in action.

If you want to make your Bhutan trip even more special, consider timing your visit around a festival to experience the country’s rich traditions firsthand!

How many days are sufficient for a family trip to Bhutan?

13441204469?profile=RESIZE_710x

When traveling to Bhutan with kids or elderly family members, it’s best to opt for a slow-paced itinerary with plenty of rest breaks. Unlike solo travel, where you can move quickly from one place to another, a family trip requires extra time for preparation and movement.

Tips for a Family-Friendly Itinerary:

Spend 2-3 days in each destination – This allows enough time to explore without feeling rushed.Include rest days – Avoid back-to-back travel days to ensure kids and elderly members stay comfortable.Plan shorter travel durations – Bhutan’s roads can be winding, so limit long drives to avoid fatigue.Choose family-friendly activities – Easy hikes, cultural visits, and nature walks make the trip enjoyable for all ages.

By creating a balanced itinerary with enough downtime, you can ensure a memorable and enjoyable Bhutan experience for the whole family!

Located about 180 km northwest of Kolkata, Bishnupur is famous for its terracotta temples. Built during the 17th and 18th centuries these terracotta temples are one of the finest examples of the classic architectural style of Bengal. The stunning architecture and the handicraft reflect the town’s glorious past. Bishnupur was the capital of the Malla kingdom and it flourished during the 17th and 18th centuries. The unique form of architecture of Bishnupur that involves detailed terracotta work was developed during the reign of the Malla kings.

Bishnupur is known for its beautiful terracotta temples. The Vaishnavite kings of the Malla Kingdom built the terracotta temples due to the shortage of stone. Various styles from the nearby regions are incorporated into the unique architecture of the shrines. Multi-lobed arches and Muslim domes were blended with features such as the curved Bangla roof for the temples. The shrines are crafted from brick and laterite and then covered with terracotta tiles.

The twin shrine of the Rasmancha and Jor Bangla, the Shyam Ray temple, and the Radheshyam temple are some of the temples you must visit. Brishnupur is also famous for jewelry, artifacts, pottery, and handloom saris. The Bishnupur Gharana, a school of Hindustani classical music, is taught in local music academies. Visit the Bishnupur Acharjya Jogesh Chandra Purakriti Bhawan or Bishnupur museum to see the history of the region. It is the only art and archaeology museum in the district and it houses around 100 sculptures, 5000 manuscripts, and British history. Folk arts and crafts, various photographs, and many specimens of textiles are also kept in the museum.

The temple is a pair of cottages with a four-way sloped roof. Earlier, the temple was called Krishna Ray, but it is now known as Jor Bangla due to its design. The design of the temple is very rare in India.

Bhutan is a landlocked country. Hence it can only be reached by land or by air. Below are the details of these two ways of reaching Bhutan.

Reaching Bhutan by road:

The nearest airport to Bhutan in India is Bagdogra Airport in West Bengal. Indians usually take a road trip to Bhutan from Bagdogra. We also did the same. From Bagdogra, you can take a taxi or a shared cab or a bus to the border of Bhutan.

Earlier, before the COVID lockdown, Indian vehicles could enter Bhutan with a road permit. But now, there is an additional charge per day levied on Indian vehicles entering Bhutan. Which is INR 4500/- per vehicle per day for four-wheelers entering Bhutan from India, for the duration of their stay in Bhutan at the time of this writingDo verify the latest charges if you are planning to drive to Bhutan. Also, charges are different for 2-wheelers and heavy vehicles.

So, most of the Indian vehicles now drop tourists on the border town of Jaigaon, right before entering into Bhutan. From there, a Bhutanese vehicle picks the tourists up and takes them to Bhutan.

To reach Bagdogra to Jaigaon by road takes around 4 hours to 5 hours.

So, if you are going to Bhutan through this route, try to start early in the morning. Take an early morning flight so that you reach Bagdogra by noon. And you comfortably cover the distance from Bagdogra to Jaigaon by evening. We did the same.

Obtaining the entry permit and entering into Bhutan by road:

13453041467?profile=RESIZE_710x

From Jaigaon, one can cross the India Bhutan Gate and complete the immigration formalities before proceeding further into Bhutan.

At the border of India and Bhutan, right beside the gate, there is an immigration office. You enter the office building from India, and complete the formalities to obtain the permit. And when you exit from the building, you find yourself in Bhutan.

In the meanwhile, your luggage will be loaded in the Bhutanese vehicle that you would have booked for the tour. And the vehicle will cross the road and wait for you on the Bhutan side.

I have written this separate post on what all documents are required for Indians visiting Bhutan. And the whole process of obtaining the permit, explaining it clearly. Since, some rules around tour packages for Bhutan from India have changed post covid, do read that post to understand the whole scenario.

Note: When going from Bagdogra and returning, it’s good to book a local Indian cab till Jaigaon. And a Bhutan cab for the complete round trip of Bhutan from the border. When you return, the Bhutan vehicle will again drop you at Jaigaon. And from there you can hire an Indian vehicle for your onwards journey in India, ex., for Bagdogara airport.

Reaching Bhutan by train:

There is no rail network in Bhutan! Being a Himalayan country, it’s very difficult to lay and maintain rail network here. Hence, Bhutan has not invested into one. The nearest railway station is Hasimara in India. You can reach here via a train from Siliguri and some other major stations of India. But from Hasimara, you will have to hire a cab from here to Jaigaon and continue onwards accordingly. Siliguri on the other hand is a major train station in India, which is well connected from rest of India. So, you will get a train easily upto Siliguri town and from there you can take a cab to Jaigaon.

Reaching Bhutan by air:

The only international airport in Bhutan is Paro International Airport. It is a very small airport, with a very small runway. And very limited flights operate here. From India, a few flights are operating from Delhi. And then other flights are there connecting Bhutan to the rest of the world. But a flight to Paro is often very costly. Having said that, if you decide to fly into Paro, you will be completing your arrival formalities and permit documentation at the Paro International Airport.

What are the documents required for visiting Bhutan:

13453041686?profile=RESIZE_710x

The residents of India, Maldives and Bangladesh don’t require any visa to enter Bhutan. Others need to apply for a visa. I am not aware of the visa application process. As being an Indian, I just required a permit to enter Bhutan. The permit stamp is done on the passport. And the following documents are required to visit Bhutan from India, Maldives or Bangladesh :

  • A passport valid for at least next 6 months
  • Government ID proof – voter Id card or Aadhar Card
  • In the case of minors, if they don’t have a passport then a Birth Certificate is required

Our agent also asked us to carry 4 passport-size color photographs each, but they were not asked for anywhere. I have detailed out this complete process of obtaining the Bhutan travel permit from India.

Where to stay in Bhutan

If you are traveling by road, the first night of your stay in Bhutan, you will be staying in Jaigaon as you will reach here by evening most likely. Jaigaon is a town on the Indian side, on the India – Bhutan border. We stayed at Hotel Sheetal Residency in Jalgaon, just 200 meters from the India – Bhutan gate. Basic rooms and in-house restaurant. But it’s location was excellent. And a lot of shops nearby where you can find everything from food to umbrellas to medicines – whatever you may need for your onward journey.

You can also book Hotel Satyam, which is another decent option to stay in Jaigaon.

What are the general travel guideline changes for travel to Bhutan post covid:

13450244275?profile=RESIZE_710x

The travel guidelines to visit Bhutan have changed a little post covid. When Bhutan reopened it’s border to tourists in September 2022. I have tried to capture the changed guidelines in my Bhutan travel guide as per my experience.

  • Taking a guide is a must for Indians as well as foreign nationals visiting Bhutan. The guide will accompany you wherever you visit in Bhutan. Earlier it was not a mandate, barring at some sightseeing places like forts and temples.
  • Indians visiting Bhutan have to pay an SDF (Standard Development Fee) of INR 1200 per day per person (for everyone above 5 years of age). Earlier this was not the case. Foreign Nationals have to pay US Dollars 160 per person per day at the time of this writing.
  • Four Wheeler Vehicles from India entering Bhutan have to pay a fee of INR 4500 per day per vehicle for the duration they will be in Bhutan.
  • The entrance fee to most of the sites has been hiked after the lockdown has opened. In most places it is Nu 500 per adult and Nu 250 per child older than 5 years. Entry is free for children below 5 years of age.

What is the best time of the year to visit Bhutan?

13453044067?profile=RESIZE_710x

As per our Bhutan travel guide, Bhutan is almost a year-round destination, barring the monsoon months when heavy rains cause frequent landslides in the area. However, the months of April and May are considered the peak season in Bhutan. It is spring season then. And the country comes alive with fresh greenery and blooming flowers at this time of the year. But, to experience the beauty of Bhutan in winter, when it gets covered in snow, one can visit from December through February. January is the coldest month in Bhutan. It snows and the temperature drops to sub-zero at places. But this is also an off-season due to the harsh weather, which means you get much better deals at much lower prices. The months of October and March form shoulder seasons.

When we visited Bhutan in April first week, Thimphu and Paro were still quite chilly in the evening and morning hours. While Punakha was quiet warm in the day and pleasant in the evenings.

If you want to coincide your visit with one of the festivals of Bhutan, then you can visit as per the below festival timings. However,  our Bhutan travel guide suggests that do check the exact dates of the festival in the year you are traveling, for, they follow the lunar calendar. And hence, not fall on the same date of English Calendar every year.

Festivals of Bhutan:

  • Thimphu Tshechu festival which is also the National Festival of Bhutan is held on the 10th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar. In the year 2023, this festival will be celebrated from 24th to 26th September.
  • Jambay Lhakhang Drup is celebrated in October – November. It is a fierce festival of energetic celebrations including dances, mask performances, fire performances etc.
  • Wangdue Phodrang Tsechu is also celebrated in the Wangdue Phodrang region in the October – November period
  • Punakha Drubchen is a festival celebrated in Punakha in February or March. It recreates the memories of the war with Tibet and celebrates Bhutan’s victory over Tibet through performances commemorating the same.
  • Paro Tshechu Festival is celebrated in March or April. We just missed it by a day 🙁 when we reached Paro, it was the last day of the festival. Near the city center, huge fare is held, People dance, eat, shop, rejoice, re-enact scenes from legendary tales, and enjoy themselves to the full. Even on the last evening of the festival, there was so much crowd and the whole atmosphere was so charged up.
  • Haa summer festival is celebrated in the month of July, wherein the nomads of Haa Valley celebrate their lives. And the tourists also get a chance to mingle with the locals and celebrate.

What currency works in Bhutan

One Indian Rupee = One Bhutanese Ngultrum (Nu)

Indian currency is widely accepted in Bhutan. US Dollars are also accepted. Particularly, if you go shopping for expensive items like gold, then US Dollars are preferred. And cash is accepted everywhere. We didn’t pay through card or any other means anywhere but only cash. So, just to be on the safer side, we converted around 15k INR to Nu in Jaigaon. Also, the same agent who arranged our whole travel helped us with currency exchange as well. However, at times, it can be a problem to use very high-value Indian notes in Bhutan. For INR 500 notes are not that well accepted everywhere. So, if you plan to do with Indian currency in Bhutan, then carry smaller denominations of notes with you.

What kind of mobile and internet connectivity works in Bhutan:

13453046289?profile=RESIZE_710x

  • Wifi was available in all the hotels that we stayed in Bhutan. Although the speed was not very great at ours though.
  • My husband who uses Airtel, got his international roaming enabled for Bhutan. At the time of this writing, Airtel had a package of INR 3000/- for 10 days.
  • I took a local tourist sim with one-week validity for INR 330/- which had mobile data of 1.5 GB and some talk time. From a shop in Phuentsholing, the border town on the Bhutan side, right after crossing the gates. And the documents required to obtain this sim were my passport copy and the Bhutan travel permit copy.

Overall, our Bhutan travel guide suggests that you enable international roaming in at least one phone when you are traveling with family or in a group. And when traveling solo, you should enable it. Because if for some reason you will need to do some transactions where a message through your sim card is expected, you can do that only when you have enabled international roaming.

For us, we had to alter our travel plans and change the dates of our airline tickets for some reason, which needed some digital payment. Which in turn needed OTP on one of our phones. Since, Abhishek had international roaming enabled, we were able to do the same without any hassles.

What to pack for a trip to Bhutan

Actually what to pack for Bhutan depends on which time of the year you are traveling to Bhutan. As per our Bhutan travel guide, really heavy winter wear is required if you are traveling in the months of December, January and February. In these months you should carry good boots which can help you travel on snow, heavy winter jackets, layers of woollen cloths, caps, gloves, etc. When we traveled in the first week of April, these are the basic things we carried with us –

  • 2 sweaters (woollen) each for kids
  • 1 moderate jacket each for all of us
  • 1 heavy jacket for kids – just in case it got suddenly cold
  • 2 full sleeve t-shirts for everyone
  • 2 half sleeve t-shirts for everyone
  • 4 pairs of socks, 5 pairs of undergarments for everyone
  • 1 woollen cap for everyone
  • full cover bottom wear and full sleeve nightwear
  • umbrella (as it may occasionally rain in these months)
  • Trekking / hiking shoes
  • Medicines, particularly for altitude sickness and motion sickness
  • Some snacks and munchies that the kids like – just to satisfy their taste, Otherwise you have plenty of options in Bhutan.

What is the language spoken in Bhutan:

Bhutanese, English and Hindi are widely spoken in Bhutan. Most of the people understand Hindi well, and are able to converse in Hindi. While the travel guides in Bhutan receive training in different languages like Chinese, Spanish, French etc. while doing their certification for becoming a guide. So, if you don’t understand Hindi, English or Bhutanese then you can always ask your travel agent to provide you with a guide who knows the language you understand. Both our driver and our guide were very well versed in English as well as Hindi. So, it was a breeze to communicate while in Bhutan.

What kind of food is available in Bhutan

Some of the main cuisines of Bhutan that you will get in most of the restaurants include Ema Datshi, Shakam Paa, Jasha Maru, Puta, Suja, Goen Hogey, Dumplings and Shakam Datshi. I will soon dedicate a separate post on the cuisines available in Bhutan. In short, most of the Bhutanese dishes are bland, healthy and good for the mountain climate. I found very less junk food options in Bhutan.

General tips on visiting Bhutan as per our Bhutan travel guide

  • Carry an umbrella with you when visiting in the summer and spring months, as it rains all of a sudden in Bhutan
  • You must wear good trekking shoes, particularly for trekking to Tiger’s Nest. As it is a moderate trek and general walking shoes might not suffice.
  • Use packaged water bottles while in Bhutan.
  • Dispose of the waste properly in designated waste bins, There is heavy fine for littering in Bhutan.
  • Our Bhutan travel guide says that it is a must to carry motion sickness medicines for winding Himalayan roads
  • Take enough stops when traveling between places to further combat motion sickness
  • Keep your passport and permits with you all the time. There are designated check posts where these documents will be checked as you travel through Bhutan.
  • If you are traveling with your kids, make sure to carry all their general medication with you as you will not get the same brand in Bhutan. (Happened with us)
  • Most of the shops close early in Bhutan., around 9:00 pm
  • Tipping the hotel staff, guide or driver is not a norm in Bhutan but it is a good gesture.

These routes reward trekkers with breathtaking Himalayan vistas, lush forests, and diverse landscapes, making Bhutan a dream destination for adventure seekers.

Bhutan tours range from short 4-5-day getaways to extensive 10-14-day journeys, allowing you to explore the country at your own pace. The duration of your trip will determine how much of Bhutan you can experience, including must-visit destinations like Paro, Thimphu, Punakha, and Phobjikha, along with various outdoor activities.

For a more immersive experience, consider venturing into offbeat or remote regions such as Haa Valley, Trongsa, Bumthang, Mongar, or Lhuentse, where you can explore Bhutan’s hidden gems and stay in serene, less-traveled locations.

Tour Budget Considerations

Bhutan follows a well-regulated tourism policy, requiring visitors to pay a minimum per-night fee known as the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF). Tour packages offer great value for money, with costs varying based on luxury level, itinerary preferences, availability, and travel season.

To get the best experience within your budget, share your estimated expenses with a licensed Bhutan trip planner. A reliable tour operator can help customize your Bhutan tour package, ensuring a memorable trip at budget-friendly rates.
