Fourth Annual St. Jude Hope and Heritage Gala

Join us for the fourth annual St. Jude Hope and Heritage Gala, the premier New York event celebrating the contributions and culture of the Middle Eastern community and the lifesaving mission of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. 583 Park Ave, NYC. 7-11 p.m.

Your support will honor the heritage and vision founder Danny Thomas shared with his fellow Americans of Lebanese, Syrian and Arab ancestry, who rallied to help fulfill his dream of building St. Jude.

St. Jude is leading the way the world understands, treats and defeats childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases. Families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food — because all a family should worry about is helping their child live.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital

The mission of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is to advance cures, and means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. Consistent with the vision of our founder Danny Thomas, no child is denied treatment based on race, religion or a family's ability to pay. Treatments invented at St. Jude have helped push the overall childhood cancer survival rate from 20% to more than 80% since it opened more than 50 years ago.

BALLET HISPÁNICO

Announces

2017 Carnaval Gala

Celebrating Trailblazing Latina Leaders

RITA MORENO

Legendary Actress and EGOT Winner

With the Toda Una Vida Lifetime Achievement Award

and

NINA VACA

Chairman and CEO, Pinnacle Group

With the Nuestra Inspiración Award

The Plaza Hotel, Monday, May 15, 2017 at 6:30pm

New York, NY - Ballet Hispánico announced today it will be honoring Puerto Rican legendary actress and EGOT winner Rita Moreno with the Toda Una Vida Lifetime Achievement Award and Ecuadorian-American Pinnacle Group Chairman and CEO Nina Vaca with the Nuestra Inspiración Award at its annual Carnaval Gala in The Plaza Hotel's Grand Ballroom, 768 Fifth Avenue, NYC. Cocktails begin at 6:30pm and dinner and dancing commence at 7:30pm. Proceeds, which last year totaled just over $1.1 million, benefit the creation of new Company works, scholarships in the Ballet Hispánico School of Dance, and community arts education programs.

Ballet Hispánico was founded by a Latina leader of its own: National Medal of Arts recipient Tina Ramirez, who emboldened the organization in 1970 with her mission to provide access to arts education and give voice to the Latino artist. Her legacy has lived on since 2009 through the expansive vision of Artistic Director & CEO Eduardo Vilaro, who has infused Ballet Hispánico with a bold and eclectic brand of contemporary dance that reflects America's changing cultural landscape, and who has established programs that have nurtured a new generation of Latino leaders, many of them female.

"I love what this organization does for the community; it's inspirational. It fits with my own mission to serve our youth," said Rita Moreno. "I am excited to find other ways of partnering with Ballet Hispánico to reach our community with the arts."

Carnaval, the inspiration for Ballet Hispánico's annual Gala as envisioned by Eduardo Vilaro, is a celebration of the impactful voices of the Latino world-an exciting and fitting way to showcase the resilience and unparalleled vision of one of America's cultural gems. Attended by more than 500 of New York's most influential civic leaders, philanthropists and artists, the evening is filled with live Latin music and thrilling performances by the Ballet Hispánico Company and students of the School of Dance.

The event is headed by Gala Chairs Jody Gottfried Arnhold, Richard Feldman, Kate Lear and David Pérez.

Attire for the event is festive black tie. To purchase tickets, a table, a journal advertisement, or for more information, please contact Felicia Mayo at (212) 362-6710, x 44 or efmayo@ballethispanico.org.

Refuge: When seeking personal refuge, we go deep inside ourselves and begin an internal journey of transformation and enlightenment. Selwyn translates this personal journey into a vocabulary of immediate, athletic, sensuous, and raw movement that has come to define her work. The piece includes a progressive series of solos and duets punctuated by group sections that magnify the personal experience into a shared one.

Amanda Selwyn Dance Theatre creates original and dynamic dance theatre that raises questions, challenges social norms and values, and magnifies humanity through dance. Productions pivot around core themes and through an interplay between athletic and pedestrian motion, activate emotional expression, character, and narrative in a rich and abstract collage. Presenting dance in an immediate, mature, and inclusive way, we engage audiences from start to finish and beckon a response of thought, feeling, and soul. www.amandaselwyndance.org

Founded in 2000, Amanda Selwyn Dance Theatre has presented over 30 productions at NYC venues including Tribeca Performing Arts Center, New York Live Arts, Dance Theatre Workshop, Dance New Amsterdam, Danspace Project, Ailey Citigroup Theater, The Kumble Theater, and John Jay College. We have been presented twice at Jacob's Pillow, Westfest, DUMBO Dance Festival, Dixon Place, Dance Teacher Summit, COOL NY, Movement Research, and Pushing Progress Series. L'Après-midi d'un faune (The Afternoon of a Faun) by Vaslav Nijinksy, Staged by Ann Hutchinson Guest L'Après-midi d'un faune (The Afternoon of a Faun) was choreographed by Vaslav Nijinsky for the Ballets Russes and first performed in the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris on 29 May 1912. Nijinsky danced the main part himself. Both the score (Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune by Claude Debussy) and the ballet were inspired by the poem L'Après-midi d'un faune by Stéphane Mallarmé.

The work had an overtly erotic subtext beneath its façade of Greek antiquity, ending with a scene of graphic sexual desire. L'Après-midi d'un Faune is considered one of the first modern ballets and proved to be as controversial as Nijinsky's Jeux (Games1913) and Le Sacre du printemps (The Rite of Spring, 1913).

Untitled Pas de Trois by Pam Tanowitz Pam's third work for New York Theatre Ballet.

La Chatte métamorphoses en femme (The Cat transformed into a woman) by Frederick Ashton La Chatte métamorphoses en femme (The cat transformed into a woman) was originally a one-act opéra comique of 1858 with words by Eugene Scribe and Mélesville, and music by Jacques Offenbach.

She Holds Out Her Hand by Antonia Franceschi Premiered with New York Theatre Ballet at Danspace Project in Fall 2016.

ABOUT NEW YORK THEATRE BALLET

Now in its 38th Season, and invigorated by a recent move to St. Marks' Church in-the-Bowery, NYTB has reinvented itself as New York's downtown ballet company. With its ever-expanding repertory, NYTB's cutting edge programming brings fresh insight to classic revivals paired with the modern sensibilities of both established and up and coming choreographers. The diversity in repertory explores the past while boldly taking risks on the future. Performing in more intimate spaces, often to live music, brings the audience and the dance together for a personal experience. When reflecting on NYTB's first season at St. Mark's Church-in-the-Bowery in 2015, The New York Times said, "The members of Theater Ballet are not only refined dancers but also unaffected actors... they draw you in. The intimacy of the space only helped; the amplitude and honesty of their dancing has found its match in St. Mark's Church."

NYTB's 2016-17 season will continue with:

Schimmel Center:

 Uptown/Downtown/Dance

Box Office: 212-346-1715,

www.SchimmelCenter.org

April 28 and 29, 2017 at 7:30pm

Tickets: $29

The evenings will include a restaging of former NYTB resident choreographer Edward Henkel's Revision, created in 1986 and the World Premiere of Misfit Movement Makers by Broadway choreographer Chase Brock set to indie-folk and folk-pop music with lyrics.  "I see this new ballet as a millennial folk dance, a dance that will feel current without feeling contemporary," said Mr. Brock.

About Change for Kids

Realizing that just a small amount of money could have an immense impact on a child’s education, CFK Founder Ted Madara and friends established Change for Kids in 1996 to collect and fund supplies for public elementary schools.

In 2009, Board Member Colin Smith elected to put his investment banking career on hold to serve as CFK's Executive Director. Since then, we’ve expanded our mission to provide literacy, arts, health, and other essential programs that help set students on the path to a brighter future. We’ve added nine new partner schools and increased our financial support over 2,000%. Our model, however, has remained the same: recognize and respond to the unique needs of each partner school.

Today, we serve nearly 4,000 students and are partnered with ten incredible schools in Queens, Manhattan, Brooklyn and the Bronx.
