Right across the lagoon from Palm Beach, South Florida´s oldest incorporated municipality (1894) and the county´s largest city (at just over 117,000) is a very appealing destination in its own right. A bit more urban-feeling and less chichi, it boasts has several historical districts featuring late 19th- and early 20th-century architecture, plus attractions like the Norton Museum of Art (Florida´s largest, with 19th and 20th century U.S. and European art, a Chinese collection, contemporary works, and photography); the Palm Beach County Historical Society Museum; the Mounts Botanical Garden; the Manatee Lagoon Eco-Discovery Center (mid-November through March is best for manatee sightings); and wonderful sun, sand, and swimming at beautiful beachfront John D. MacArthur State Park.
