As our name indicates we specialise in doing political tours, and we are watching events unfold closely in the middle east. The question is at what point is it safe to travel? There are obviously rules to follow (UK foreign office and State Department advisories for example). But then there are grey areas. In Turkey we have an upcoming tour that looks at the rise of the Anatolian Tigers and Turkey as a regional power. Turkey's relationship with it's Kurdish minority is of key interest. We also want to know what's happening to relations with Syria and we are travelling down to Gaziantep. (See http://www.politicaltours.com/tours/turkey-erdogan-anatolian-tigers ) It part of our purpose to get to the nub of these conflicts, but we also want to keep our clients safe. Interested to hear what other peoples thoughts and experiences are.

We get a good mix of people, some academic, but a lot of professionals with a strong interest in current affairs. Our last trip to North Korea had two playwrights, a barrister, (Brits) a lawyer from Iceland, and a former bond trader turned academic from Australia. The last Turkey tour had a similar mix of nationalities and professions.
On another point - we are seriously grappling with issue we first raised above (how soon, how safe). We have a tour that we'll announce for Libya.. While we feels it's mostly benign environment, security is a real concern, as things can flare up unexpectedly. But we have clients who want to go never the less (the security costs may ultimately be prohibitive - we shall see). The other issue is that we don't want to cover active war zones.. so Iraq and Afghanistan are definitely out. But former conflict zones are obviously a key part of looking at international affairs. Soon we will be launching tours closer to our base in the UK. One will look at the origins of the financial crisis, and its effect on the UK, another will soon look at the prospects for independence in Scotland. Do take a look at the website for more on the Turkey and North Korea tours (we are in Pyongyang this April). We will be in Bosnia in May. See http://www.politicaltours.com/tours for scheduled tours.

This sounds a lot more substantive than most travel tours. What sorts of people participate in these trips? Mostly Brits? Americans? Academics?
