Looks like sitting on the tarmac for hours will soon be a thing of the past---at least for domestic flights.
The Department of Transportation has issued new regulations requiring airlines operating domestic flights to allow passengers to disembark after being confined to delayed airplanes for three hours.
Exceptions were made for safety or security issues or if airport operations would be disrupted. In addition, food and water must be provided to confined passengers within two hours, and plane lavatories must be operable.
U.S. carriers operating international flights must specify their policy in advance.
The regulations go into effect 120 days after passage of the regulation on Monday, December 21, 2009.
