  Seriously, my sister has just undergone mindbending training to write and post for About.com, for which I understand she'll make about $700/mo. for (I believe) one article and two blog posts per week. Anybody have experience writing for About.com?

  A long time ago I was sailing in the Caribbean and met a guy in Palm Beach who was a "walker". (I didn't know that then, it was later when I saw a documentary and he was featured that I learned this.) He escorts elderly women to society functions. He didn't charge, but accepted thank yous at the end of the season. After reading Evelyn's piece, I'm thinking it's time to dust off a tux and refocus my career on helping those with failing eyesight get out and about.

  I started writing for Examiner more than two years ago, before the phrase 'content mill' was invented, when I was writer number #1995 to be 'hired'.  I was -- and am still -- a National, not a local, writer, with a slightly higher pay scale than newer and/or locals like Linda.  Was making decent -- never great -- money.  The operating word is 'was'.    

  Now they have 40thou-plus writers, at least 50 of whom are covering the same subject as I do, and have lowered the payment per PV for everybody. Plus, they changed the CMS recently, so in addition to the new system being more complicated and time consuming, I can no longer cross-link to any of my 200 plus articles posted under the 'old' system, which the new system does not recognize.  That further reduces PVs, and income. 

  More -- I just got an email that there is yet another new pay scale being introduced, which now will be based on an obtuse algorithm combining the number of postings per week with PVs, subscribers and trackable 'marketing" to everything from FB to Farq.  Enough said.

  I do Outdoor Days in L.A. on Examiner to help raise my visibility as a writer. I am also in Real Estate and my days are a good community outreach. I view the Examiner site as a springboard and free advertising not a source of revenue per se.It would be nice to get paid more for my efforts, but I have not been pressured by the site to produce more content than feels comfortable for me, so I am okay with it for now!

  I have not written for the Examiner, David, but friends who do write for them work awfully hard and make precious little money from it. Has anyone here know anybody who's had real monetary success writing Examiner pieces?

  We mourn the passing of Maria Conte Mikkelsen of ConteMporary PR, who died yesterday of a stroke. Her clients included  Marriott, Visit Sweden, the Finnish Tourist Board, the Munich Airport, Fred Olsen Cruise Lines, among others.  Whether professionally or personally, she greeted everyone with a smile and genuine warmth and will be missed by all who knew her.  She is survived by her husband, Bjarne (B.J.) The service in her memory is as follows:
