Do's and Don't's for Thanksgiving Travel

We're experienced travelers who go far and go often. But what about less exotic trips, like visiting Mom for the American Thankskgiving? "Don't fly the day before the holiday" -- okay, but you knew that already. What other advice do you travel media give people on this, one of the biggest travel weekends of the year?

  • If you're plans involve driving, stay off the roads on the Sunday after Thanksgiving. I have been involved in many dangerous traffic situations when driving U.S. highways on that day. Plan your return for Saturday or stretch the holiday weekend to Monday.

    • Donna, I'm going to take your advice. Interesting thing about today, the Monday before Thanksgiving: My wife flew west to visit her family, and it turns out the flights weren't oversold or even sold out. How do you account for that?

  • I had the very lucky experience of being bumped three times on my way home for a press trip. I have $750 in vouchers. I hope this happens to me again.

Any suggestions for people who WANT TO BE BUMPED, AND WOULD BE THRILLED TO GIVE UP THEIR SEAT FOR A VOUCHER

  • A brilliant solution, Allan.

My least favorite Thanksgiving memory involves the time that my wife and I really, really wanted to avoid all the thanksgiving drama, so we made reservations at a French restaurant a few blocks from our apartment. Showed up at the appointed time and -- surprise! -- the chef had ditched his regular menu for the day so he could serve Americans dinde and cranberry sauce.

  • My suggestion would be for you to observe the Canadian Thanksgiving which is in October. That way you avoid all the rush and higher travel costs.
