Position: News Editor, Cruise Critic

Position DescriptionThe News Editor is responsible for assisting in the management of day-to-day editorial operations for Cruise Critic, especially, and also the company’s Independent Traveler Web site, plus various writing, editing, launching and social media duties.

Job Responsibilities:

• Help manage an in-house and remote team of assistant editors, associate editors, senior editors and web-content producers
• Manage Cruise Critic’s news operation and serve as primary point person on ship-related news, reviews and features.
• Oversee Cruise Critic and Independent Traveler editorial staffs and operations in absence of editor in chief and/or managing editor
• Help represent Cruise Critic at industry events
• Write, assign and edit Cruise Critic stories, including features, ship and destination reviews and Lido Deck blog posts
• Oversee Cruise Critic ship reviews and cruise line profiles, ensuring that content is timely, factual and properly promoted
• Work with Cruise Critic managing editor and editor in chief on strategic planning and developing new content ideas and setting editorial team priorities
• Work with Independent Traveler editor to develop and implement monthly editorial calendar, from idea creation and writing blog posts to editing and story launches
• Update IT homepage on an as-needed basis
• Confab with other Independent Traveler Inc. departments (tech, SEO, product development, etc.) to accomplish Cruise Critic and Independent Traveler goals
• Launch stories for publication on Cruise Critic as needed
• Direct editorial team’s social media effort on Twitter and Facebook
• Proofread newsletters and promo copy for Cruise Critic and Independent Traveler
• Collaborate with team members in the establishment of editorial standards, guidelines, style, conventions, and principles
• Train editorial staff as needed

Hiring requirements:

• Minimum 7 - 10 years related experience
• Experience working with editors and writers in a deadline driven environment.
• Proven creative skills, effective leaderships skills and strategic vision in a fast-paced, collaborative environment
• Solid writing, spelling and grammar skills
• Proven success using social media to promote content and connect with audience
• Good working knowledge of html, Word, Excel
• Excellent interpersonal and problem solving skills, detail orientation, organizational ability, self-direction and drive
• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment with competing priorities
• Self-motivated team player essential
• Bachelor's degree in journalism, online media or related field preferred
