The elaborate 'White Temple' in Chiang Rai, Thailand

A three-hour drive from Chiang Mai, and sleepier and more laid back (including its nightlife), Thailand's northernmost major city was also founded in the 13th century and has an impressive collection of temples and other historic structures to prove it. Highlights include temples such as the now famous 24-year-old monument known as the White Temple.
