The monkeys of Tiwai Island

This inland island, about 4 1/2 square miles in size,is home to a wildlife sanctuary with some 135 species of birds, mongoose, wild pigs, crocodiles, and even pygmy hippos. But it's best known for having the world's second largest concentration of primates, especially monkeys such as Colobus (like this little guy or gal) and the endangered Diana.Visitors are guided along some of the 31 miles of trails and get to visit communities of the local Mende people. It's a long drive from Freetown - some seven hours - and so is best done on an overnight tour.
