Nyanza, where kings ruled before French colonialism

This town of around 25,000, some 2½ hours south of Kigali, was the last capital of the centuries-old Kingdom of Rwanda, from 1958 till the monarchy was abolished in 1962. There´s a recreation of the traditional palace of the mwami (king), pictured here, and right nearby a more modern palace, built by the Belgian colonizers in art deco style. Both are now visitable as museums.
