  • Depends on where you are.  San Francisco, sure.  Other area without adequate public transit, no.  In SLO, the downtown area is doable without a car but the transit isn't up to snuff for other areas of town.  If they're going to ask you to do that, they should have good alternatives to the car first.

  • Ed Wetschler says that San Luis Obispo is trying to convince visitors not to use cars in their town, but he asks if the locals would be willing to forego their wheels. Good question. Fellow Californians (or knowledgeable visitors), could we survive, say, three or four days, without our cars?
