  • An interesting look at how some artists are reimagining the classic old fado musical form: https://daily.bandcamp.com/lists/new-fado-list

How 21st century artists are reinventing a 19th century sound.
  • I've spent time in both Brazil and Portugal, and as a language nerd I've always been fascinated by how Portuguese is spoken in these respective countries. I confess I have a slight preference for the continental version, but o português brasileiro definitely has its charms! In the course of looking into what distinguishes them, I found this post from LanguageTrainers.com especially interesting: https://www.languagetrainers.com/blog/brazilian-vs-portugal-portugu...
  • Plenty of non-Portuguese have heard of fado, but very few of this country's other UNESCO World Heritage song tradition, called "cante alentejano" - polyphonic, a capella, and named after the region where it originated, the Alentejo, which borders Spain. Here's a UNESCO video which gives a good overview: https://youtu.be/_Pn53uSYwOM

  • Here, for your enjoyment, is the lovely vid and lyrics for our current Top Tune of the Week, "Rosa Branca" from Portugal's "new fado" sensation Mariza:

De rosa ao peito na roda
    Eu bailei com quem calhou.
De rosa ao peito na roda
    Eu bailei com quem calhou.
    Tantas voltas dei bailando
    Que a rosa se desfolhou.
    Tantas voltas dei bailando
    Que a rosa se desfolhou.

    Quem tem, quem tem
    Amor a seu jeito,
    Quem tem, quem tem
    Amor a seu jeito,
    Colha a rosa branca
    Ponha a rosa ao peito.
    Colha a rosa branca
    Ponha a rosa ao peito.

    Oh roseira, roseirinha
    Roseira do meu jardim...
    Oh roseira, roseirinha
    Roseira do meu jardim.
    Se de rosas gostas tanto
    Porque não gostas de mim?
    Se de rosas gostas tanto
    Porque não gostas de mim?

    Quem tem, quem tem
    Amor a seu jeito,
    Quem tem, quem tem
    Amor a seu jeito,
    Colha a rosa branca
    Ponha a rosa ao peito.
    Colha a rosa branca
    Ponha a rosa ao peito.

De rosa ao peito na roda
    Eu bailei com quem calhou.
De rosa ao peito na roda
    Eu bailei com quem calhou.
    Tantas voltas dei bailando
    Que a rosa se desfolhou.
    Tantas voltas dei bailando
    Que a rosa se desfolhou.

    Quem tem, quem tem
    Amor a seu jeito,
    Quem tem, quem tem
    Amor a seu jeito,
    Colha a rosa branca
    Ponha a rosa ao peito.
    Colha a rosa branca
    Ponha a rosa ao peito.

    Oh roseira, roseirinha
    Roseira do meu jardim...
    Oh roseira, roseirinha
    Roseira do meu jardim.
    Se de rosas gostas tanto
    Porque não gostas de mim?
    Se de rosas gostas tanto

  • I will be traveling in Portugal for the month of February. I am thrilled to return after many years. My home for three years was Cascais and I taught in an American International School. Portugal was my "soul" place. Now, I am working on relearning my Portuguese.
  • It occurred to me that one really good way I've really been able to improve my Portuguese and other languages is through music, especially pop songs. And there's nothing more classic than "The Girl From Ipanema" (A Garota da Ipanema). So here it is, complete with lyrics...

    Olha que coisa mais linda
    Mais cheia de graça
    É ela menina
    Que vem e que passa
    Num doce balanço
    Caminho do mar.

    Moça do corpo dourado
    Do sol de Ipanema
    O seu balançado
    É mais que um poema
    É a coisa mais linda
    Que eu já vi passar.

    Ah, porque estou tão sozinho
    Porque tudo é tão triste
    Ah, beleza que existe
A beleza que não é só minha
    Que também passa sozinha.

    Ah, se ela soubesse
    Que quando ela passa
    O mundo sorrindo
    Se enche de graça
    E fica mais lindo
    Por causa do amor...
