An undersung jewel among European capitals, the fact that it was once capital of a world-spanning empire has left it with a wealth of stuff to do and see; highlights include atmospheric old quarters like the Alfama and Bairro Alto, the crenellated São Jorge castle; amd the seaside Belém district with marvelous historic monuments like Jerónimos Monastery; dining and nightlife are also excellent (don't miss an evening at a club featuring fado, Portugal's soulful version of the blues). Nearby, the scenery and royal castle of Sintra are well worth a visit, and you can put in some beach time in Cascais and other Estoril Coast resorts.
