I agree with all of you. Certainly advance warning would have helped and there must be better systems in place for getting information to indepenedent travelers. Much can be done in terms of Peru putting things online and allowing for online overseas purchase of tickets.
Many people plan their trips to Machu Picchu, months ahead. No one disputes the need to protect the ruins from overuse. But it seems that giving people advance notice is preferable to springing it last minute.
I checked the ticket website and there were plenty available in August & September, but you have to be in Peru to make the purchase, which is a disadvantage for independent travelers who want to make their own arrangements. Traveling that far to wait to buy tickets and then finding out you can't get them does not reflect well on the overseeing agencies.
We have been able to secure tickets for all our groups, but we understand the frustration of people who find the new arrangements to be unfriendly and uninviting.
Of course theres must be a restriction of the limit of people that visit Machu Picchu so we can preserve the archeological remain, but this limit of tourist should be announced at least 3 months before, and not just expect to change from one to another day.
Right now for the future tourist i suggest to ask yout travel agency if they have your Machu Picchu tickets already.
I have those already for my groups on august and september.

Yes... I understand your concern.... and I agree.
The solution right now is to buy those tickets and the rest via a tour company. Tour in Peru offers it... and of course mine too.
