Peruvian Amazon jungle lodges

Does anyone know of jungle lodges without electricity along the Peruvian Amazon? We stayed in two lodges about 10 years ago, which were incredible. I think they were run by Explorama Lodges out of Iquitos. If you've stayed there, can you tell me what they are like these days? We'd like to take another trip toward the headwaters, out of Iquitos, but not on one of those small cruise-type ships. Our first and last trip was via a modest river launch that seated maybe 20 people, also by small dugout canoes and a few excursions on foot (we went from one lodge to another through the jungle).

  • Hello Pat,

Rainforest Expeditions, out of Puerto Maldonado runs 3 ecolodges along the Tambopata river. I have stayed at each of the three of them and absolutely love them there. They are eco friendly, like I said, so they minimize their use of energy by only turning the generator on for 3 hours a day so guests can re-charge their batteries in the main lobby. Rooms have 3 walls with the fourth side open to the jungle. If you're a hot water person, beware, since they do not have hot water showers, however, most of the time it's warm enough so that a cooler shower is quite refreshing. Tons of animals, experienced and friendly guides and comfortable rooms with hammocks. More at www.perunature.com.

Explorama has now three different lodges : 1-) I think is the one you visited at Yanamono area they started with that lodge. 2-) They have another lodge where the hunging bridges are is at Napo river further down the Amazon. 3-) they have a luxe lodge is call explorama Inn with airconditioning , swimming pool .
Bus as you know depends what budget and what are your expectations are for this time if you like to live experiences with the people and local commnities then you can check other options.

  • Hi Pat, we work with 3 lodges in Puerto Maldonado, we recommend Corto Maltes if you want an affordable lodge with little tech. We also work with explorama lodges in Iquitos and have nothing but good reviews from our clients although they have upgraded a bit and do have electricity obviously.

    Hola Pat:
Hope this message finds you well. Open the attached files which have some tours in the souther Amazon Jungle in Peru. These lodges are really nice and they work closely with native communities, personally I think they are much better than the ones in the Norther area such as iquitos, as they have been build in much more pristine areas.
