One of America's most historic states, it ranges from the urban flair (and grit) of Philadelphia and Pittsburgh to the bucolic beauties of the Poconos, Dutch Country, and Bucks County. And for history, Philly and Gettysburg! are absolute bucket-listers.
Longwood Gardens in 'Spring Has Sprung & U.S. Gardens Await Discovery'
Spring is here, and summer's already around the corner! If you’re a flower gardener - and the National Gardening Association estimates that members of over a third of U.S. households are - you already may have begun to till soil and plant seeds. And those who like to travel as well as garden (as well as those who enjoy gardens more by watching than working), now is time to plan a trip to take in some of Mother Nature’s bountiful beauty. Yup, that's the olde Quaker heritage. It was worse when I was a kid. My family used to go to Pennsylvania on Sundays, and you could not buy beer in that state on the sabbath, so my father would bring a beer from NY, stick it in the stream by the restaurant where we ate, and then BYOB into the restaurant.
Maybe I should have been more clear. I don't write about it, just a passing comment below, but when we were there, if you wanted to buy beer, you had to go to a distributor who only sold by the case or find a specially licensed bar that could sell (expensive) six packs, or drink in a bar. I guess I'm just venting a little frustration there. Here's some more information on them: Pennsylvania Liquor Laws
Hey, Darryl, is the part about the alcohol laws in a different blog post, or did I just miss it when I read this?
We're heading to the City of Brotherly Love today at The World on Wheels and will be focusing a week on the state with more Byzantine alcohol laws than Utah. Let's start with a trip to Philly: http://tinyurl.com/y7cguwd
On today's Fields of Dreams at The World on Wheels...the most interesting ballpark in baseball. "I don't always go to Pittsburgh but when I do, I go to PNC Park." http://tinyurl.com/2g2xn8n
It's a good thing they're in the City of Brotherly Love because they are the losingest team in baseball. This week's Field of Dreams update at The World on Wheels focuses on Citizens Bank Ballpark in Philadelphia, home of the Phillies: http://tinyurl.com/26c3w99
At The World on Wheels, it's George Washington, Pirates, and Frank Lloyd Wright as our road trip rolls into Steel City, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania: http://tinyurl.com/22ufw7q
Now on our blog: What makes Pittsburgh a surprisingly cool foodie destination?
Ken, good post. If you're there in season with kids, I'd also add a Phillies game. It's kid heaven.
Stuff to do with kids: If you're in town with little guys, 12 and under, Philly has some great things to do. There are my top 5:
5. The Morris Arboretum (outside Chestnut Hill) - Very kid friendly!
4. The Battleship New Jersey (Camden)
3. The USS Olympia and USS Becuna
2. The Philadelphia Zoo
1. The Please Touch Museum
