One of America's most historic states, it ranges from the urban flair (and grit) of Philadelphia and Pittsburgh to the bucolic beauties of the Poconos, Dutch Country, and Bucks County. And for history, Philly and Gettysburg! are absolute bucket-listers.

Longwood Gardens in 'Spring Has Sprung & U.S. Gardens Await Discovery'

Spring is here, and summer's already around the corner!  If you’re a flower gardener - and the National Gardening Association estimates that members of over a third of U.S. households are - you already may have begun to till soil and plant seeds. And those who like to travel as well as garden (as well as those who enjoy gardens more by watching than working), now is time to plan a trip to take in some of Mother Nature’s bountiful beauty. Gardens come in a variety of types, sizes and offerings.…

Deerfield Retreat & Spa in the Pocono Mountains

Admittedly, I'd never heard of Lo-Wei, a unique exercise class that combines yoga, strength training and flexibility that stretched my body in ways my mind never thought possible. But it is only one of almost three dozen fitness classes, all part of the dawn-to-dusk workout, weight loss, and education focus of the one-of-a-kind, all-inclusive Deerfield Health Retreat and Spa in East Stroudsburg, in the Poconos Mountains of Pennsylvania, where my friend Kathy and I spent three nights a while…

Kinzua Sky Walk cited in 'In the USA this Fall, Combine Foliage with Adventure'

Dan and Mary Stroudt oooh and aaah at the multicolored scenery below the hot air balloon in which they’re riding. The journey is very different for Mark and Marylee Sutherland as they help to paddle a rubber raft along a stretch of whitewater in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. Betsy Goodman and Tom Cross are traveling at a slower pace, strolling across a glass-bottom observation deck. These disparate experiences may seem to have little in common, but they do. They provide…

  • Now it says on a comercial that you can HIRE the Mummer's string band. And an announcer said that January29 Darlene Love and The Dupres and the Platters are performing in Phillie. I wish I was there end of Jan.
  • I'll go out to a nice restaurant with the family tonight. Its out last night out in Penn. before we go back to FLA.  And tonight I bet we won't need reservations. We're watching the Mummer's parade right now on the tube and its a hundred times better than it was years ago. Net year we'll go there in person God willing. If your home turn it on!
  • "Athough Jan. 1 ends with a quiet evening, it is Saturday night. What will you do... tonight?"  That's a question on the New York City group, but for those of us in Pennsylvania this weekend -- whether you're in Philadelphia or Erie County or anything in between -- what's on today?
  • I have watched the New Years Day Mummers Parade since I was a little, often in person by going with my family to Broad Street. But even after all these I always look forward to seeing it. If you're not lucky enough to be in Philadelphia for this early burst of Mardi Gras costumes and music, watch it on TV. You'll love it!
  • 2nd year in a row we got less snow in blizzard in poconos than Philadelphia but it is still beautiful out here, not black snow like in the city. Kids went skiing at camelback dressed like Santas and they wanted to win a free season pass but someone else won that. Still they skied for free and they know about other deals at Camelback and other area ski resorts. I hope their's a plane for me and the wife when we go to the airport to go back to Fla.
  • Chuck, great comments on PA's budget and the impact of tourism.  Richard, hope all is well with you and Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, whichever is pc for you guys!

  • We'll also be happy to answer any questions or help you with some ideas about PA Tourism. As Chuck pointed out our tourism budget has been reduced dramatically along with many other state services. We are very active in the social media environment with our new Office of Social Media that hopefully keeps getting the word out. Check us out on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Foursquare or Flickr - our channels are all: visitPA. Thanks.

  • Thank you as well.  I'm happy to participate, and am active on several tourism boards locally, state level and nationally.  So, I'm also pleased to help!  Regards to you this Christmas.  Our present arrived at 3am this morning when our Marine & his beautiful wife arrived for the holiday!  Stay well!

  • Thanks Chuck. I'll bookmark your page and thanks for offering to answer Qs on PA. Merry Xmas.

  • I'm a new follower, and want to reflect on Allie's 10/06 post.  Most PA residents are not aware of the impact of PA Tourism.  I work in that sector; and here are some important facts:  Tourism promotion funding was reduced from $32M in 2009 to $14.2 in 2010; and then the Rendell administration cut further to only $11.2M midway thru the year; an overall 65% reduction.  Did you know Tourism is the 2nd largest industry in PA, behind Agriculture?  And, that the Tourism budget in the Pocono Mountain Region rivals Philly's?  A mere $28 billion is injected into the PA economy with 400,000 jobs & $10.7 billion in wage/benefits & $2.8 billion on state & municipal taxes.  Help us keep PA a great tourism spot.  And, if I can help anyone with answers on PA tourism; if I don't know the answer, I'll find out!  Regards to everyone.
